For the 63rd Sanguine Soul, Honey Knuckles and Mama FeelGood attempt to pay homage to their former east bay city of residence. The Town, Funk Town, OakTown, The O, however you rep it, Oakland has and continues to be a center of art, soul, and cultural diversity. Often written off as the “ghetto” counterpart of San Francisco, this show aims to break down this racist stigma and remind folks that Oakland is a place where revolutionary thought and practice is part of history, where Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton started the first Free Breakfast for School Children Program (later adopted by the Federal government), where Bruce Lee began teaching Jee Kune Do to non-Chinese against the will of the conservative Chinese community, and where some of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods exist and create art. Today, the east bay mecca has seen a revival in it’s nightlife and music, with the reopening of the historic Fox Theater and new venues sprouting each month.

It is tough to pay homage to The Town in 2 hours, but luckily we had some help from our homie Aebldee. The man comes through legit, fitted with green and yellow and rockin’ an eclectic set of afro, funk, soul, hip hop, and…ah who cares about genres! The dude drops hella dope tracks, and it’s not in Oaktown fashion to trip about where things belong in the popular media. Yadadamean?

It’s February, the month of love, and Sanguine Soul starts it off right with an episode we call “Passing Me By”. Z-Note kicks off the show with a tribute set paying homage to Dilla, Teddy, and Old Dirty. Next we welcome veteran DJ and producer fflood as he takes us through an enchanting journey starting with Alice Coltrane, weaving through jazz, soul, hip hop, and house vibes, and ending with the beautiful voice of Nina Simone (all using only vinyl). After the set, fflood talks to Mama FeelGood about his music, blog, and how he got his name. Honey Knuckles picks up where fflood left off and closes out the show with an uptempo house set of poly percussive rhythms to make you dance.

For this week’s episode we tried out something new. Shelmatic jumbled some marbles in her mouth through the whole show, and I (Z Note waxing digital right here) tried to conjure strange words in a fruitless effort to describe the music of Bay Area experimental indie band Birds & Batteries. Who wants to be boxed into the silly expressive powers of language anyway? Band frontman and vocalist, Michael Sempert, dropped in to select some Eritrean drum machine tunes and tell us a bit about B&B’s latest EP, Up To No Good, a minimal funk synth effort that instills magnetizing images of an enchanted forest where the flora and fauna are actually robotic manifestations projected from the mind of a twisted hillside gnome–a psychotic little creature with dark intentions and yet, the pathos of a P Funk, cosmic liberator. It’s really a very satisfying combination of sounds. Imagine if John Carpenter produced the soundtrack to Lord of the Rings in the early 80s. Or consider a prismatic focus into one corner of David Bowie’s labyrinthian monsters.

In the spirit of layering the organic with the electric, we happily conceptualize this episode Verdant Volts, a certain tongue twister for our mush mouthed Shelmatictron. And, yet she still carries the torch, saying much wiser things than I. In the second half of the show I suspend my cationic words in favor of spinning some tunes, intertwining psychedelic jazz, post-punk electronica, abstract beats, and a bit of funkified disco for ya’ll. It seems we’re coming full circle with the history of hiphop and disco music. The inchoate beginnings of hiphop emerged from dance parties in Bronx projects where everything from James Brown to Kraftwerk and KC and the Sunshine Band could be heard. The first rapp (double p) records pressed on wax were disco raps, from the assumed first of the batch in 1979, Fatback Band’s “King Tim III” to the legendary Sugar Hill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight.” By the late 80s New York hiphop artists rejected disco in favor of the louder funk that would orient the genre for the next two decades. Even the burgeoning West Coast electro rap scene folded for the funk. You can hear recent vitriol (still, in the most fun way possible) towards disco in the Dr. Octagon’s “Bear Witness,” (produced by Dan the Automator), sampling an amazing Tommy Boy promo record by the forgotten 4-Ever Fresh, “Urban Sound Surgeon.” And some heads still can’t get down to the fever.

But, disco is back with a vengeance. From infecting indie punk with infectious dance grooves (thanks “House of Jealous Lovers”), mainstream pop (Black Eyes Peas, Lady Gaga, Kanye), as well as the futuristic thump of the underground (Dam Funk, Hercules and Love Affair). So, in spirit of the restored disco energy, Shelmatic and I (Z Note) venture through a disco breakdown to give you a taste of the variability and exceptional sounds of over 30 years of disco tunes. We lay down some modern soul, dusted boogie grooves, the funkier side of the cowbell, and a dip into synth heavy madness. Tell us what color of the spectrum gets your magic shoes flailing. We love it all.

Despite the [...]]]> Don’t Sweat the Technique


The times are changing for hiphop. The raw, funk break and heavy lyricist sound of the late 80s and early 90s doesn’t carry the genre forward today. Just ask New Yorker columnist Sasha Frere-Jones (although if done right we could “Tream ‘Em Right” like Chubb Rock all over again).

Despite the drastic transitions in mainstream hiphop of our day to the sounds of four on the floor pop disco, some golden age artists are still putting in work. Raekwon just released his phenomenal part II of Only Built For a Cuban Linx. Ghostface is still holding it down and Goodie Mob reunited four a tour. And our very own, homegrown and foundational Souls of Mischief plan their own return to the sage of futuristic old school flavor with the upcoming Montezuma’s Revenge. Representing for the Hiero imperium, Tajai blesses the mic near the end of the show to give us the word on the new album and drop some history on what Souls of Mischief have been up to the past 15 years (wow). Honey Knuckles and myself, Z Note, open it up, venturing forth from Eric B and Rakim’s “Don’t Sweat the Technique.” Expect the straight up funk paired with the synth, always poeticized by amazing lyrical patterns and flows. In true independent and grassroots spirit, we also have a bit of fuzz on this week’s recording. But just think you’re listening to a tape!

Honey “The Carnal” Knuckles and Z “The Humble Magnaminous” Note go back to the roots of Sanguine Soul with this week’s episode, “Give It Up, Turn It A Loose.” We look towards the one and the only, the funkiest there is, the godfather of soul stompin’ music, the forever imitated and never duplicated, James Brown, for inspiration and guidance on this trek. And with the help of the Soul Power king, we take a trip into the crates of funky grooves, dusty soul, heavy sample based hip-hop, and today’s revival of it all.

Honey Knucks delivers a strictly 45 set, going through his collection of dusty vinyl from Mandril’s “Happy Beat” to Sharon Jone’s “I Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Is In”. As for myself, Z-Note I try to move from the funky hip-hop of Special Ed and Ed O.G. into the new old school of Poets of Rhythm and Breakestra. The fortuitous gift of sensation astounds me. Our eyes pierce the window of the world from close to far. Our ears capture the smallest vibrations in the air. With tongue and nose we indulge in the flavors of this earth. And our bodies lunge into textures fine and grainy, substances liquid and solid. But the senses do not always divide so cleanly. Sounds, colors, substance, and audible vibration blend in the most fascinating ways within the neural pathways. We might feel the wretched smell of the Civic Center metro station, hear the ringing heat of a tumultuous sun, or like Nabakov, visually associate letters with colors. And music too often evokes impressions beyond the strictly audible, from raw feelings to colors and smells to tastes. In fact, music lies deep within the realms of synesthesia, where the expression of the world and human body meet in an ever dynamic, nebulous intertwining.

For this week’s episode in dedication to the phenomenon of synesthesia, we decide to select some synth based tunes and variations thereof that might just impress your skull with bubbling colors. I (Z Nooooooote) hold down the Sang crew solo for this one. Honey Knucks and Aisha are busy melting their brains in the desert, and Shelmatic has peaced to Lala land. So enjoy my shit! Expect some jazz-funk masterpieces, sultry boogie nastiness, and dub-step erotica. But I’m much more excited to mention that Luis Vasquez joins me in the studio to guest select a synth-wave radiality and introduce one of his many projects, The Soft Moon, to all listeners here and far. We discuss the immediacy of creative expression and the hindsight of categories and genres. And we chop it up about some of Luis’ most imaginative sonic muses. The Soft Moon debut full length will come out some time in the winter with a tentative November date, so stay tuned!

We’re back from a brief hiatus prepared to transform Sanguine Sunday into the next era of Sanguine Soul. Thanks to everyone out there who voted on the poll! It was quite a turnout for our small grassroots endeavor here on the internet and pirate radio waves in the Bay. We’re mad excited about bringing sincerity and rawness to an expanded notion of soulness fresh for the 21st century. There’s limitless possibilities when you’re committed to transforming genre, self, music, and most ambitiously the world as a whole. And that brings us to this week’s concept piece, transformations, the morphing of one identity into another. While we typically are passive subjects of proccesses of transformation as the world turns, we are also capable of the freedom to determine transformations of ourselves, our situations, our communities, and the future itself.

In this week’s episode we decide to exhibit a certain aesthetic of transformation while showcasing some of the many talented musicians who work towards transformation. Honey Knucks chops it up with Khingz, a community educator and talented lyricist based out of Seattle. Khingz discusses his upbringing and the experiences that led him to work in social outreach and gives us the low down on his new album From Slaveships to Spaceships (Fresh Chopped Beats / Madk). The finely crafted and extremely versatile sound collage paints a picture of Khingz’ personal struggle for self-determination, rising from the chains of oppression to a hopeful freedom of the mind in the outer cosmos.

I (Z Note) jump Transformations off with a set bookmarked by Divine Styler’s enlightened Sufi reflections, “Am I An Epigram For Life” and James Toney Jr. Project’s politicized Afrobeat anthem “Revolution Poem”. Closing the show, Honey Knucks drops a layered set, integrating boogie sounds from the late Michael Jackson “Baby Be Mine”, world rhythms from Nickodemus “N’Dini” and “Inferfo” courtesy of local beatsmith J-Boogie. Shelmatic per usual engineers the levels, keeps the grooves smooth and the show orchestrated with Flying Lotus’ 1983(Plug Research, 2006) in the background. A schematic experiment with organizing life forms of music; frame a particular sonic structure not by genre or geographic location or even general features of the sound, but by a conceptual orientation. What results is an unfamiliar stretching at the seams of our comfort zones with the music at hand. A bending of our familiar understanding, allowing us to venture into the borderlands of the unknown. What falls into the conceptual categorization may be playful and evocative and ultimately challenging to our conventional expectations of what sorts of music should engage in collective dialogue.

In the spirit of such sonic experiments Sanguine Sunday presents to our listeners a special episode on Electric Soul! We gather inspiration from Little Dragon’s unique brand of cobalt musings in sun drenched, synthesized space folk. Whoo, adjectives! Hemmingway must be rolling in his grave. Fuck it. At halftime, Shelmatic catches up with lead crooner of the outfit, Yukimi Nagano, for a back on forth on Little Dragon’s idiosyncratic influences and nuanced tightness as a prismatic bending band.

Honey Knucks jumps it off with a seamless meandering through the electric soul of D’Angelo to Pretty Lights’ highly original florescent funk and back to the fundamental earth tones with Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition”. Summoned in response, I (Z Note “The Asteroid Surfer”) push the smoked out burgundy wavelength–flipping the bold new rhythms of Sa-Ra into the slick swagger of Fatima and Prince’s b-side brilliance.

It is surprising how similar music and food are. Both satisfy our hunger for nourishment, albeit in different ways. It could be said that hunger satiates pangs of a physical emptiness while as music enriches and fills out feelings of spiritual yearning. Although on the counter argument, music can inspire the body to get down just as easily as food can make your soul float up (or root down) to celestial heavens.

So for this episode, the Sanguine fam decided to pay tribute to the wonderfully delicious sounds of food inspired jams. We jump it all off discussing the spreading phenomenon across San Francisco of food carts, serving up reasonably priced pastries and curry dishes and so much more for local denizens of the Mission district. Seduced by the sound of such tasty cakes, Aisha scouts out the creme brulee cart and brings back some patrons to get personal with their love for the cuisine revolution on the streets.

Honey Knuckles and myself (Z-Note) cook up a five-course meal made of the finest sonic ingredients. I’m telling you, this shit is fresh. Enjoy Idris Muhammed‘s thick bodied funk and DOOM‘s pure love for sustenance and the Fat Boys tell you what’s really good with “all you can eat” buffets and Fela Kuti take us back to the liquid source of all life. Shelmatic pulls the whole meal together with the instrumental soundtrack of Goodie Mob‘s classic “Soul Food” sound odyssey.

The food frequency resonates with some monster jams to satiate your eardrum hunger. I admit a good number of them conjure up rich libido imagery, from jams bursting ripe with sexual innuendo (Cameo‘s “Candy” anyone?), or others dripping steady with juicy rhythms and thumping slick bodied grooves; but there’s also straight forwards odes to the simple joy of good eats. After all, food goes pretty far in its metaphorical prowess. I recommend filling up on this sound spectrum to some soul food, whatever those two words might mean to you!

We reminisced about those few precious days by warming up the station and cafe with some sweet, sticky bass slaps and rollerspacin boogie beats.

Joining us in the studio was our dear friend DJ Shred One (SweaterFunk, BkC leCirque). Born and raised in LA, her music tastes were formed and molded as she followed around her vinyl collectin’ older brothers and cousins. She fine-tuned her selection skills in NY, created her unique style in LA and continues to grow here in the Bay Area. In her own words, she was born in LA/molded in Brooklyn/dreaming in SF.

To appease our appetite for boogie funk, each DJ brought their own tangy special recipe to create a delicious array at our sanguine table. Honey Knuckles started the night off with a heart racing set of funky disco beats such as those of One Way and Mandre, which graced roller rinks and b-boy circles everywhere in the late 70′s and early 80′s. We reaped the benefits of some heavy e-diggin’ by Z-Note as we traveled many cosmic miles to read the “Message from the Stars” and sway to some rich boogie roots. Lastly, Shred One brought it all together with a bangin powerhouse set of boogie classics like Paul Hardcastle and Evelyn “Champagne” King while the entire show bubbled harmoniously over the beats of Dam Funk, leading ambassador of modern boogie funk.

Arriving at our eighth episode strong, we at Moss Street Studios decided to take a step back and wonder, how did we get here? But instead of giving you a stale linear narrative connecting the dots from point A to episode 8, we decided in good Sang Sun fashion to get abstract on yo’ ass. For episode eight, we pay tribute to the many modes of transportation that take us from ‘here’ to ‘there.’ Often taken for granted if not straight up neglected and spat upon (have you seen the 14?), transportation can get a hard rap. But whether you get your move on around this world by foot or double dutch bus, train or scraper bike, airplane or spaceship, roller skate or hover craft, there’s always a way to funkify your spacial travellin’.

If your daily grind ever feels a little too boring, or if the idea of exploring new lands does not seem to get you out of bed, then well, let your mind take you elsewhere. Aisha baptizes it “movementation,” (another word added to the Sanguinetionary), let’s just define it as the art of movement. And what better way to praise movementation than through one of its most celebrated conjurations? Music. Let music into your life and it will teleport you within instants across the seven seas and throughout the depths of time.

So, join us in this episode of Sanguine Sunday on an imaginative odyssey, flowing seamlessly from David Axelrod’s masterful “The Mental Traveler”. Z-Note plays up the theme that nothing takes us spacio-time traveling quite like bumping the memory lane of music, transporting us to the raw feelings of distant places and far off times. Here at Moss Street Studios we’re all about stretching our ear holes into the far reaches of our outer soul. While some tend towards plugs for such stretch armstrong feats, we prefer expansion by way of rhythmic vibration. Call it aural exercise. And if you would be so generous to flex your inner lobes with us, then allow us to take on the role as your slightly offbeat, soul sonic yoga instructors.

In this episode of Sanguine Sunday we teeter on the limit zones of the funk. Whether meandering along the electro-soul of Little Dragon reworked into a synth heavy jazz groove by Floating Points, traversing the uncannily dank texture of Asha Puhtli’s resonant vocals, or bear witnessing to Man Parrish blurring supposedly tight packaged color and orientation lines with his idiosyncratic brand of electro-funk, this mix lingers on the slippery dynamism of concept and sound.

Oscillating between the sonance of the traditional and the new–brushing the past with fresh meaning in contemporary combinations while informing the inchoate feel of the novel with its heritage–we do not shy away from evolving montages of beat and melody. That’s where Babel Rythms comes in. From the dusty ruins to the rebuilt heights of the Tower of Babel, to the oftentimes forgotten fact that music is the lone universal language which even divine punishment neglected, the funk endlessly babbles up into nascent forms of roots music.

And so, we bring you a feature on the burgeoning sound of Dub-Step orchestrated by local enthusiast, grand mixer, and up and coming producer, Lokae (AKA BOOM LOLO). Originally hailing from the grimey back waters of East London, the dissonant boom bap rhythms of Dub-Step has swooped down into the sewage spills of the San Francisco Bay with the force of a ravenous mutant sea gull, this shit is real. Turn it up! Time to exercise the them ear holes, ‘cus in a reworking of DOOM’s words, we got more soul than a hole in sock. There ain’t no denying that folks from all walks of life–those nestled at the coast, perched in the hills, to the salts of the earth spread over heartland and valleys–are tuned into its frequency. We’re talking about the throb-throb in your chest that connects each ventricle’s eighth note to California’s veracity. This week, the shrine of Sanguine delivers sound escapes generated circa Cali’s geographic identities–allowing us to kick back and meditate on the miraculousness of her musical births while ameliorating some of toil’s stresses.

As Marlena Shaw elucidates, “It’s like the sound you hear that lingers in your   ear / That you can’t forget from sundown to sunset. . .” ya’ll know it–the pulse reverberating via sea breaks on an endless shore, the rolling hills that abrupt or mature into mountainous Sierras, the every shade of emerald gesturing you to partake in sticky sweet inhales, the sun-loved earth mirroring skin tones while reflecting warmth into desert skies. These tracks just don’t hit our eardrums, they reverberate through our veins and capillaries. Just as each individual is separate yet whole, the bounty of California’s sonorousness are distinctive however united through her splendor.

Let us connect between our geographic and reflective states as Aisha moderates the sanctity of the Sanguine. The sonic waves can get political in protean fashion, balancing out an aural spectrum that ranges from social rhetoric in rhyme to personal meditation in rhythm. We want to share with you some of the recent frequencies that hum with (or shove up against) these political vibrations, and we also dig a little deeper to kick up some of the dusty records that still push relevant social criticism while hungering for the knowledge of self that makes change from the bottom up–that expand the mental type flow. Listening to these joints reminds us that a good many struggles continue to this day despite any claims on our supposed linear progress. Yet, music shines through, dealing out a hopeful healing power in uplifting sound, rejoicing in the exquisite joy of life through a heartbeat drum and celestial word play.

Live from Washington D.C. our private contact “Henry” tells us about the excitement currently bubbling up in our nation’s capital and what we might expect to see in the near future of Obama’s administration. Back in the studio, Aisha demonstrates her ‘each one teach one’ ethos in reading some powerful letters written to President Obama from her middle school students who themselves do not shy away from the exhileration of this time. We’ve been trying to orchestrate a podcast feed, but such a feat combined with the time consuming ventures in learning sound editing via logic, has postponed our new years mix so long that well, it’s almost 2010 already. Let’s get down to the program. In the spirit of the new horizon set forth by 2009, Honey Knuckles cuts up some soul collaborated proto-break tunes–putting emphasis on the afro-beat, disco, and krautrock sectors–with the resolution of improving his b-boy technique in the cypha’. And I (Z-Noooote) take the year of recession to reflect upon the magical quality of money. In resolving that it’s time to either find a hustle or make some more cash money in recession times, or less ambitiously, just wondering about the poetics of the dollar bill, I find some inspiration in a collection of cross-genre dollar lamentations, on the grind motivations, and fuzzed out flows flipped up for my own purposes. Finally, Aisha rocks steady with some knowledge on the Oscar Grant protest in Oakland and the perennial abuse of police authority in the inner city. Let the chi flow!

In tune for the Holiday season in the midst of thin wallets and heavy eyelids, Sanguine Sunday mixes up some of what we like to call recession soul. Bringing you that uplifting flavor from the hustle to the bounce, some of those I need monay type of jams, and even the more contemplative what the hell is goin’ on with our economy ballads–recession soul covers all it takes to overcome the despair of dusty pockets.

In the spirit of such hard times, Aisha interviews Rayan on the grind, a struggling San Francisco renter and resident of Moss Street about the merits and craft of couch surfing.
