Sampling and copywright law is her specialty other than mixing Roots music as a resident for Suryadub, at San Francisco’s Club Six. She was voted “Best Dance DJ of 2008″ by the readers of the SF Bay Guardian, and for sure does she have brains to match the talent. Ripley is a UC Berkeley Law student, who studied in Jamaica, and has a passion for bringing copyright truth to light. Honey Knuckles and Ripley have a timeless conversation about cultural appropriation and dissect the hypocrisy of how American music labels bitch about Jamaican artists remixing their artists when for years American and European labels have been sampling “world” beats while not caring about royalties or giving back to the communities from where they culturally appropriated.

For the 63rd Sanguine Soul, Honey Knuckles and Mama FeelGood attempt to pay homage to their former east bay city of residence. The Town, Funk Town, OakTown, The O, however you rep it, Oakland has and continues to be a center of art, soul, and cultural diversity. Often written off as the “ghetto” counterpart of San Francisco, this show aims to break down this racist stigma and remind folks that Oakland is a place where revolutionary thought and practice is part of history, where Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton started the first Free Breakfast for School Children Program (later adopted by the Federal government), where Bruce Lee began teaching Jee Kune Do to non-Chinese against the will of the conservative Chinese community, and where some of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods exist and create art. Today, the east bay mecca has seen a revival in it’s nightlife and music, with the reopening of the historic Fox Theater and new venues sprouting each month.

It is tough to pay homage to The Town in 2 hours, but luckily we had some help from our homie Aebldee. The man comes through legit, fitted with green and yellow and rockin’ an eclectic set of afro, funk, soul, hip hop, and…ah who cares about genres! The dude drops hella dope tracks, and it’s not in Oaktown fashion to trip about where things belong in the popular media. Yadadamean?

Take a deep breath, as you tune into your indigenous frequency. Release the breath MMMMmmmm. Feel vibrations from deep within…We’re calling you back to Babaylan.

Babaylan is one of the many terms for the ancient priestess, healer, shaman, warrior woman that heals holistically both individuals and the community. Best believe, I know some vocal percussionists and MCs can’t deny, there’s a drumbeat that pulses from every cell in your body. Back to Babaylan is remembering your innate rhythm, powerful body. As music has an innate ability to connect with our heart’s frequency, we’re presenting some tracks to assit in that meditation, connection back to self.

So let’s appreciate your inner her/him, an appreciation that can also be connected back to the deepest sense of your internal Earth. Because sadly, as this Earth day has rolled around to the horrific BP oil spill in the Mexican/Louisiana Gulf, the balance of many ecosystems are in flux. The Earth is living and nurturing, so at very least, in connecting to self, our inner Earth connected to the pulse of physical Earth should not be ignored. Babaylan is this holistic connection, a call to the selves we lost through capitalism, colonization, patriarchy, disenfranchisement from the political/economic process, illegal status of gay marriage, illegal status of being human without papers…the list goes on an on and Babaylan is reclaiming this power.

For this Valentine’s Day weekend we hit you up with not only some drums of passion but also the ebullient vocalizations and soulful poetics that spring forth from the valley of propulsive rhythms. Ya, it’s quite a ride, featuring exuberant sounds from Derrick Love–of San Francisco’s straight heated monthly get-down, Gemini Disco. He rocks a straight vinyl set linking James Brown to pummeling disco jams. We chop up it for a minute, exchanging ideas on creativity with restraint: the focused and specialized character of vinyl DJing in contrast to the sprawling and rhizomatic nature of mp3 DJing.

Shelmatic, back from her LA travels for the moment, starts it all off with the legendary percussionist Babatunde and his unstoppable “Jin-Go-Lo-Ba”, as the drums of passion take us from Nigeria, to Jay Electronica’s New Orleans upbringing, back to California, and all the way around the world once again. I end the show with some slow burning polypercussive fire spanning the Afrobeat, breaks, disco, and electro skunk spectrums of the funk. Born from the higher powers of creation, there is a place many artists can describe as their “zone”, “nirvana”, or what freestyle MCs call getting open. This metaphysical realm is when paint, chords, camera angles, notes, words, or medium of choice escape the artist, with little need for cognition, to simply take form from pure impulsive imagination. The guests we present tonight mold their clay from similar instinctive sites.

Tonight’s first featured guest, SF local DJ JB, described forming his sets as “on the fly”–meaning that he’ll have a rough estimate of the genres he’d like to vibe, but ultimately creates his sets in the moment. We also feature an interview with performance artists, Chris Sullivan aka Shockwave and Anthony Veneziale aka Two Touch, from the improv collective Freestyle Love Supreme. In a live pre-recorded interview (I know, the term “live pre-recorded” sounds oximoronic, but the interview was soooo off the hook when we recorded live, I had to disclaim!), breakdown their improv talents as analogous to free jazz.

To honor the free flowing spirits of our guests, Honey Knuckles and I also decided to wing-it, and ended up masterfully bringing-it; evident in the cohesion between banter and mixes which gracefully vibe almost as pure as Coltrane’s Love Supreme!…Haha, I wish! But I do give props to Honey Kunckles who not only spun two short sets so we could present the Freestyle Love Supreme interview within context of some boundary breaking artists, but mixed background for the interview impromptu…ahh that’s good skill.

Despite the [...]]]> Don’t Sweat the Technique


The times are changing for hiphop. The raw, funk break and heavy lyricist sound of the late 80s and early 90s doesn’t carry the genre forward today. Just ask New Yorker columnist Sasha Frere-Jones (although if done right we could “Tream ‘Em Right” like Chubb Rock all over again).

Despite the drastic transitions in mainstream hiphop of our day to the sounds of four on the floor pop disco, some golden age artists are still putting in work. Raekwon just released his phenomenal part II of Only Built For a Cuban Linx. Ghostface is still holding it down and Goodie Mob reunited four a tour. And our very own, homegrown and foundational Souls of Mischief plan their own return to the sage of futuristic old school flavor with the upcoming Montezuma’s Revenge. Representing for the Hiero imperium, Tajai blesses the mic near the end of the show to give us the word on the new album and drop some history on what Souls of Mischief have been up to the past 15 years (wow). Honey Knuckles and myself, Z Note, open it up, venturing forth from Eric B and Rakim’s “Don’t Sweat the Technique.” Expect the straight up funk paired with the synth, always poeticized by amazing lyrical patterns and flows. In true independent and grassroots spirit, we also have a bit of fuzz on this week’s recording. But just think you’re listening to a tape!

And with the help of the Soul Power king, we take a trip into the crates of funky grooves, dusty soul, heavy sample based hip-hop, and today’s revival of it all.

Honey Knucks delivers a strictly 45 set, going through his collection of dusty vinyl from Mandril’s “Happy Beat” to Sharon Jone’s “I Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Is In”. As for myself, Z-Note I try to move from the funky hip-hop of Special Ed and Ed O.G. into the new old school of Poets of Rhythm and Breakestra. The fortuitous gift of sensation astounds me. Our eyes pierce the window of the world from close to far. Our ears capture the smallest vibrations in the air. With tongue and nose we indulge in the flavors of this earth. And our bodies lunge into textures fine and grainy, substances liquid and solid. But the senses do not always divide so cleanly. Sounds, colors, substance, and audible vibration blend in the most fascinating ways within the neural pathways. We might feel the wretched smell of the Civic Center metro station, hear the ringing heat of a tumultuous sun, or like Nabakov, visually associate letters with colors. And music too often evokes impressions beyond the strictly audible, from raw feelings to colors and smells to tastes. In fact, music lies deep within the realms of synesthesia, where the expression of the world and human body meet in an ever dynamic, nebulous intertwining.

For this week’s episode in dedication to the phenomenon of synesthesia, we decide to select some synth based tunes and variations thereof that might just impress your skull with bubbling colors. I (Z Nooooooote) hold down the Sang crew solo for this one. Honey Knucks and Aisha are busy melting their brains in the desert, and Shelmatic has peaced to Lala land. So enjoy my shit! Expect some jazz-funk masterpieces, sultry boogie nastiness, and dub-step erotica. But I’m much more excited to mention that Luis Vasquez joins me in the studio to guest select a synth-wave radiality and introduce one of his many projects, The Soft Moon, to all listeners here and far. We discuss the immediacy of creative expression and the hindsight of categories and genres. And we chop it up about some of Luis’ most imaginative sonic muses. The Soft Moon debut full length will come out some time in the winter with a tentative November date, so stay tuned!

Feeling the oncoming flight of our dear friend/co-host Shelmatic from our San Francisco local we decided to throwdown a special four hour global party combined with Pirate Cat Radio’s Hetero-topia. YES, four hours of us–Sanguine Souls’ Aisha, Honey Knuckles, Shelmatic, Z-Note, with Hetero-topia’s DJ Asik and Shinobi 009–kicking it and playing whatever we had in our stash of records, cds, and mp3s. Celebrating the vast physical realm we reside within–from terrain covering lush jungles and fathomless depths of deep, we bring the colors of this beautiful globe’s plethora of ethnolinguistic communities. Tapping into the sonic variance from the traditional, to tracks fused with a synergy of cultures, we represent regions that may seem like they are a great distance from us, but in reality are very close–only a few boom-bapping beats and soulful notes away.

Dematerializing from our Mission District studio we rematerialize deep into Eastern Europe with Shelmatic’s selection of Turkish Sufi psyche via Baba Zula. Deciding to turn up the heat we head to Sur de America where Mama FeelGood sends us soul tapping with the sensuous nuevo bossa nova of CéU. Within the Brazilian realm, reminding us of music’s ability to infuse hope and inspire strength for resistance, Z-Note drops the subtle rebellion of Arthur Verocai. Continuing our transport, Shinobi 009 shares solidarity with our brothers and sisters in South/South East Asia with his own Thai inspired Oillie Feelingz: Bangkok Thoughts. Always bringing it, Honey Knuckles sends us into the little known world of Angloa dance with a torso tinging grit of a track Kurum from Buraka Som Sistema.

I could go on for hours and hours listing our highlights, but why would I do that when you can press play and teleport for yourself?

The marriage between music and drugs is a complex, conflicted, and potent relationship. Much like a drug, music can dissolve the sensual surrounding of a listener, fragmenting that reality under the influence of resonating vibration and rhythm. A wondrous mythos surrounds modern musicianship and drug use. We speculate about a musician’s drug use and reflect on the best fit between particular drug and genre of music; ecstasy and electronic music, psychedelic and well psychedelia, hip-hop and chronic, just to name a few of the most popular. Musicians often sing about drugs or equate their rhymes and rhythms to the effects of hypnotic chemicals. But we also acknowledge that music can take you there all by itself without any need for the help of external substances.

On the social level, the contemporary glorification of the drug dealer’s hustle pervades our urban centers and captures the imagination of so-seeming innocuous suburbanites. Whether embodied by Notorious BIG’s “Ten Crack Commandments” or Clipse’s more recent “Grindin’”, the seduction of the pusher’s intense lifestyle and Scarface style obsession with the American dream still colors America’s collective imaginaire. But the rejection of these archetypes and unveiling of the broader political implications behind it push forward as well, as seen in the sounds of Nina Simone’s “Pusher” and Immortal Technique’s “Peruvian Cocaine”. Honey Knucles and myself, the humble magnificent Z Note try to sketch out these multifaceted levels of the modern marriage between drugs and music. Quasimoto’s The Unseen (Stones Throw, 2000) provide the background instrumentals — a Madlib effort famously orchestrated while the musician binged on psyclobin mushrooms and other magic potions.

As if all that wasn’t enough, we also feature a special guest for this week, New York DJ and beatsmith Las Flores Project! Mic Mistress Aisha and Honey Knucks host a prerecorded interview with LFP and discuss the legacy of David Axelrod and DJ Shadow as well as the future of musicianship. Las Flores also blesses the decks with a mad decent set, introducing us to his lush grooves and swishing, wildlife soundscapes. His wavelength is certainly another reminder that music can take you higher–all by way of its own powers–to an ephemeral place of euphoria, adventure and novelty.

Oh, and we’re still trying to find a song that personifies a male love interest as a drug. Think Rick James’ “Mary Jane” but using a masculine metaphor. Who’s got it?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; face melting music is a state of mind beyond states of mind; a music outside of music; a formula underneath all formulas. The shit just rips you outside of yourself, throws you into a warp hole, and spits you back out in clothes you’ve never seen before, a parched body that looks strangely unfamiliar (like going through puberty all over again), and a brain state that rings out of wack like you just woke up from a 17 hour dream about whirling supernovae explosions that you hear with your mouth and see from your toenails. Call it musical surrealism — or maybe it’s simply insane. What’s the difference anyway?

When the Lumerians make geometry explode

In tribute to face melting music of the 5th dimension, we put together a double edged show with the A-side “Space Mountain Madness” and B-side “Oscillating Brainwaves”. This episode is named by our special guests, mad decent Bay Area psychedelic outfit the Lumerians. We attempt a Q&A mid session, but the Lumerians prefer to play music rather than talk about it (at least this time around), unless they’re making jokes or impressively having three conversations at once. It must be the psych.

The Lumerians drop some new tracks off their upcoming full length LP, the percussive hypnotics of “Melting Space” and “Xulu”, as well as a couple off their original self-titled EP from last year. We then switch in and out of fuzzed out Turkish psych, experimental French ridiculousness, and Nigerian rhythms set to put you in a hex. Honey Knuckles and I (Z Note) open and close the show respectively with heavy percussive psych breaks, chanting funk grooves, and other attempts at face melters. Shelmatic tunes in with some of Dr. Octagon’s illustriously blunted instrumentals, setting the mood for a way out there show.

We’re back from a brief hiatus prepared to transform Sanguine Sunday into the next era of Sanguine Soul. Thanks to everyone out there who voted on the poll! It was quite a turnout for our small grassroots endeavor here on the internet and pirate radio waves in the Bay. We’re mad excited about bringing sincerity and rawness to an expanded notion of soulness fresh for the 21st century. There’s limitless possibilities when you’re committed to transforming genre, self, music, and most ambitiously the world as a whole. And that brings us to this week’s concept piece, transformations, the morphing of one identity into another. While we typically are passive subjects of proccesses of transformation as the world turns, we are also capable of the freedom to determine transformations of ourselves, our situations, our communities, and the future itself.

In this week’s episode we decide to exhibit a certain aesthetic of transformation while showcasing some of the many talented musicians who work towards transformation. Honey Knucks chops it up with Khingz, a community educator and talented lyricist based out of Seattle. Khingz discusses his upbringing and the experiences that led him to work in social outreach and gives us the low down on his new album From Slaveships to Spaceships (Fresh Chopped Beats / Madk). The finely crafted and extremely versatile sound collage paints a picture of Khingz’ personal struggle for self-determination, rising from the chains of oppression to a hopeful freedom of the mind in the outer cosmos.

I (Z Note) jump Transformations off with a set bookmarked by Divine Styler’s enlightened Sufi reflections, “Am I An Epigram For Life” and James Toney Jr. Project’s politicized Afrobeat anthem “Revolution Poem”. Closing the show, Honey Knucks drops a layered set, integrating boogie sounds from the late Michael Jackson “Baby Be Mine”, world rhythms from Nickodemus “N’Dini” and “Inferfo” courtesy of local beatsmith J-Boogie. Shelmatic per usual engineers the levels, keeps the grooves smooth and the show orchestrated with Flying Lotus’ 1983(Plug Research, 2006) in the background. A couple weeks ago, HoneyKnuckles, ZNote and I, Shelmatic gathered together in the hot, sweaty Pirate Cat Radio studio to kick out some fresh world beats. Each cut it up in their own way, guiding us on an adventurous journey across the globe. Unfortunately, this beautiful episode was lost to us through the tangled web of technology and human error. Yearning to hear those songs again, we decided to bring it back this week with a Global Rhythms Redux edition.

We started off with the melodic and soothing sounds of  UK’s Heliocentrics, who took us to a “Distant Star” and beyond with their stellar Out There album swaying throughout the show. Z-Note came prepared with an arsenal of funky balkan beats mixed with traditional sufi/modern electronic amalgamations created by several talented artists at Turkish DoubleMoon Records. HoneyKnuckles held his own with the brash, fun and outrageous Gogol Bordello and the dance inducing classic, Magdalenha by Sergio Mendez.

The interational vibrations in the studio were enhanced by special guests Diana Diroy and our very own Aisha Heredia. After treating us to a short preview of their upcoming documentary on women community leaders in the Phillipines, they spent some with us talking soup about the composition of the film, the conditions currently faced in the Phillipines and their personal goals for the documentary. As often happens, money is impeding creativity. Sampling has been a hot issue in hip hop since the beginning and that has changed the face of hip hop creation. To discuss this in more depth, we brought in our legal expert, Danielle Furman from ArtVenture Law. She broke it down with the history of sampling, the legal barriers and ramifications and her predictions on the future of the music we hold near and dear to our hearts. This last Saturday, the Students for Hip Hop at UC Berkeley put on it’s 13 annual Hip Hop in the Park.  For more than a decade, this free community event has featured live hip hop bands and emcees, graf artists, bboys, bgirls, and even some shit you’ve never seen before.  Eager to get our dose of dopeness, the Sanguine Fam, sans our lovely lumpling making Aisha (*where’s Aisha?), arose early and left the rainy alleys of SOMA to watch J Boogie and the Dubtronic Science, Blu and Exile, Bambu, and many more rock People’s Park in Berkeley.  The breakers displayed their dedication by risking injury and dancing in the rain, impromtu emcee cyphers formed, and the turnout was amazing despite the rain.  A testament to what hip hop is all about: having fun and showing love for the art of community.

Many of us in the Sanguine Family have been fortunate enough to have been a part of this event through our affiliations with the Students for Hip Hop back in the day, and all us have love for events like this so this week’s episode is dedicated to theme of Hip Hop in the Park.  So tune in as Z-Note stitches together old school funk rhythms with classic hip hop tracks from past and present, Exile avoids being eaten by a bulldog during his interview with Z-Note at People’s Park, Honey Knuckles pays tribute to the past artists of Hip Hop in the Park, and Shelmatic brings us back to the Bronx with some Diamond D instrumentals.

After a fleeting glimmer of basking-in-the-hot-sun days, San Francisco retreated back to it’s cold and windy demeanor. Bundled up, we loaded up the car with our equipment and trekked to the Pirate Cat radio station. We reminisced about those few precious days by warming up the station and cafe with some sweet, sticky bass slaps and rollerspacin boogie beats.

Joining us in the studio was our dear friend DJ Shred One (SweaterFunk, BkC leCirque). Born and raised in LA, her music tastes were formed and molded as she followed around her vinyl collectin’ older brothers and cousins. She fine-tuned her selection skills in NY, created her unique style in LA and continues to grow here in the Bay Area. In her own words, she was born in LA/molded in Brooklyn/dreaming in SF.

To appease our appetite for boogie funk, each DJ brought their own tangy special recipe to create a delicious array at our sanguine table. Honey Knuckles started the night off with a heart racing set of funky disco beats such as those of One Way and Mandre, which graced roller rinks and b-boy circles everywhere in the late 70′s and early 80′s. We reaped the benefits of some heavy e-diggin’ by Z-Note as we traveled many cosmic miles to read the “Message from the Stars” and sway to some rich boogie roots. Lastly, Shred One brought it all together with a bangin powerhouse set of boogie classics like Paul Hardcastle and Evelyn “Champagne” King while the entire show bubbled harmoniously over the beats of Dam Funk, leading ambassador of modern boogie funk.

Rapper’s Delight (Found Episode)

Last Saturday between the indigo hours of eight to ten, the Sanguine Sunday crew enjoyed a landmark moment in our evolution. We pushed our first live show on the longest running independent based radio station in San Francisco, Pirate Cat Radio. If you were lucky enough to listen to the show on the live broadcast then I hope you bumped that shit loud because I have a slightly confident and not too egotistical feeling that we killed it! If not, then my apologies, but the show is lost in the abyss of squandered recording opportunities.

I kind of like that though. It brings back the hazy nostalgia for the not too distant old days of radio when you had to get the tape deck out, prepared anxiously with a new cassette, fingertips steady on the record button ready to click as soon as your favorite show bumped something fresh. My nostalgia however quickly fades away to a stronger sting of, “fuck we lost the show!”

In tribute to the lost episode, number ten in the working, Honey Knucks and myself (Z Nooote) decided to rerecord our sets in the raw. My research delves into the early wax poetics of hiphop spanning the years 1979-1983. This rapper’s delight goes far beyond the commercial success of The Sugarhill Gang. During halftime, listen in to a concise Q&A I conducted for International Record Store Day with Cool Chris, owner and manager of Groove Merchant Records. He drops fifteen years expertise knowledge in the vinyl dealing trade and the ethos of digging physical vs. surfing digital, wrapping it up later with his own take on the beginnings of hiphop. Honey Knuckles digs into his own crates to spin a strictly vinyl set that follows the development of two turntables and a mic into the disco and break dancing clubs of the 80′s. Whether cultivating rhymes, looping break beats, cutting up jazzy backbeats and horns, or arranging a whole new resonance of electro-funk, this era offers a plethora of rapper’s delight.
