Connie Lim’s voice takes my senses from an urban café into a seed in the middle of the ocean that grows a tidal wave of lush canopy greens, hot orange birds of paradise, and deep red earth colliding into a majestic grand piano. Flavorpill.com describes Lim to be “armed with a brilliant voice that is both vulnerable and mighty”. Indeed! Connie’s live set is a wonder to behold as this woman brings such intensity that she takes you to distant mystical yet familiar lands. Gracing us from tracks off her latest release, The Hunted, her lyricalism is matched by her piano virtuoso. Check her video for “Sugar”, and you will see that her mighty vocals are as bountiful as her beauty.

Sanguine Soul gets bass heavy and grimy this week. First, Honey Knuckles drops some glitchy tracks for your enjoyment. A few favorites include Drop Bombs from Ben Samples and Timonkey’s Panther Beach. Next, Digital Rust stops by for a guest set featuring some never-heard-before original tracks. Be prepared for a set both obscene and beautiful. You might call it devastatingly pretty; we think of it as Magnificent Decay. By the way, the man was up until the wee hours finalizing these tracks; that’s some dedication!

What is Irie Revolution? DJ Lapu Lapu (aka Brother K), DJ, educator, creator of Roots Kommunikations on KPFA radio, and all around knowledgeable man breaks it down on the decks. Perhaps it’s the laid back roots rhythms counteracting structured capitalist thought, or maybe it’s the spiritual vibes flowing free of puritanical dogma. No matter how you interpret it, this irie revolution begins with open ears and indigenous voices echoing from an ancient hero‘s DNA.

Much love and thanks to Brother K and Brother Lenz for stopping by. K is so down that even Boots Riley of The Coup had to stop by and give props!

In our first set, Honey Knuckles drops some new jams from Aloe Blacc, Mux Mool, and Sub Swara.
Keeping to the stride of la Familia, we welcome Sanguine cousin, Spank Bank playing under the moniker Mack Lau. He drops a classic funk and 80′s set. Tying things together, Mama Feelgood gives props to her Moreno Valley fam, and features tracks from hometown heroes Afta-1 and Stereodojo.

Born from the higher powers of creation, there is a place many artists can describe as their “zone”, “nirvana”, or what freestyle MCs call getting open. This metaphysical realm is when paint, chords, camera angles, notes, words, or medium of choice escape the artist, with little need for cognition, to simply take form from pure impulsive imagination. The guests we present tonight mold their clay from similar instinctive sites.

Tonight’s first featured guest, SF local DJ JB, described forming his sets as “on the fly”–meaning that he’ll have a rough estimate of the genres he’d like to vibe, but ultimately creates his sets in the moment. We also feature an interview with performance artists, Chris Sullivan aka Shockwave and Anthony Veneziale aka Two Touch, from the improv collective Freestyle Love Supreme. In a live pre-recorded interview (I know, the term “live pre-recorded” sounds oximoronic, but the interview was soooo off the hook when we recorded live, I had to disclaim!), breakdown their improv talents as analogous to free jazz.

To honor the free flowing spirits of our guests, Honey Knuckles and I also decided to wing-it, and ended up masterfully bringing-it; evident in the cohesion between banter and mixes which gracefully vibe almost as pure as Coltrane’s Love Supreme!…Haha, I wish! But I do give props to Honey Kunckles who not only spun two short sets so we could present the Freestyle Love Supreme interview within context of some boundary breaking artists, but mixed background for the interview impromptu…ahh that’s good skill.

After a 2 week hiatus, we are back! We hope you had good times closing out the decade because it’s been a great genesis for us, and we’re grateful that Sanguine Soul had a place in your heart last year. To celebrate the birth of 2010, we decided to forgo the expected decade in review or top 50 list and instead, decided to throw a theme of the abstract variety in your direction: Liquid Alchemy. Special guest U9Lift joins the Sanguine team for a live set, transforming original beats with samples and acapellas to create his own form of musical gold. As usual, Z-Note and Honey Knucks dispel their own brand of magic on the decks to show you their interpretation of the theme. So as you consume our first show of the decade, what is your liquid alchemy?

If you’ve clicked the play button on the above audio then you may already realize that something is awry. We recorded a great show for our fam, featuring many songs of experiences contributed from near and far, and a mad talented live performance from local electronic musician, Noel Vaughn.

But in a twist of fate after so many episodes of clear sailing until today’s one year anniversary show, our two hours of material got smashed into seven minutes of a glitchy pastiche. Quite a seven minutes worth listening to nonetheless–well, if you enjoy a collage of vocal and spatial patterns intermingled by the random impulses of the recording equipment. Much love to everyone who contributed a song and a strong memory associated with its sonic frequency; hopefully you were able to listen to us live! More songs of experience to come in the future!

Be sure to peep Noel Vaughn’s soundcloud for only a taste of what this man can do live with a computer, keyboard, and various trigger pad robotics.

For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere the winter solstice is but on the horizon, changing seasons, perceptions of light and dark, and heralding atmospheric water phenomena. This week we team with our Slayers Club homeboys Manitous and Joe Mousepad in channeling the hydrometeoric energies that have graced our skin and streets, in what we present as our ode to precipitation.

I make our boys blush with some sassy commentary on loving the sultry slickness that Honey Knuckles turned on with the lo-fi oscillations from Natural Self and the funky vocal cataclysm of Alice Russell’s “A Fly in the Hand”. Ohhhh let me warn you, before you have a chance to dry, Joe Mousepad and Manitous brings on more of the wet stuff with their fingers on our sonic trigger! Mousepad drizzles us with a KAOSS-filled jam session along side an Amazonian Rainforest set that goes everywhere from Souls of Mischief to Mux Mool, deluged to us by none other than Mr. Manitous!

Relish the soak from our ode to the element that keeps us flowing, heart’s rivers wide, allowing us another lovely motivation to hold onto the ones that warm us…enjoy with love!

Heart flowing,

We’re cooking up something special tonight on Sanguine Soul. With the theme ingredient being Bass, guest chefs Matt Haze and Joe Mousepad (Slayer’s Club) drop by the studio to help create this musical feast. I don’t know how you like your Sanguine Soul, but be prepared for low frequency flavors.

For the first course, Z-Note prepares a mix with generous servings of dubstep and hints of southern production. I hope it whets your appetites because Matt Haze unveils the main course next, a classic Drum and Bass set. Using mostly vinyl, he achieves a bold meal with Joe Mousepad adding live freestyle flavors through the mic and Kaoss pad. If you can handle it, then don’t miss out on dessert. Honey Knuckles serves a massively decadent final course of hip hop, glitch, dubstep, and breaks.

It’s been a while since the entire Sanguine Soul family rocked the airwaves together. With the return of Honey Knuckles, and a visit from Shelmatic up from LA, Sanguine Soul brings the party on this week’s episode, Bounce. Join us as our special guest, Kush Arora, injects bass into Pirate Cat’s veins and gets the whole studio bouncing. Residents Z-Note and Honey Knuckles dig deep this week and fuse boogie, hip hop, dubstep, breaks, and funk into their sets. Mama Feelgood closes us out with the dope beats of PANTyRAiD in the background.

Have you ever engaged in an act of pure expression–where the creation of movement, sound, or visual production, was manifested from thousands of synapse-firing elctro-magnetic pulses pouring from your core and coursing through your energy veins? Have you experienced your pure expression moving others? Where your internal beats cause other hearts to pump so voraciously that they can’t help but undulate in an hypnotic trance? Amazing, isn’t it?!! Well now imagine that you’re doing it mobile, ground is shaking, your moving through a vast horizon, and it’s your talent beckoning folks to gather to join an adventure…

DJs U9Lift, Victor Vega, and Ground_Control, can attest to such an experience recently performing in the phsycho-spiritual journey called Burning Man atop the Janky Barge. In this episode they share condensed versions of their sty-lo and honor the beautiful Janky–the vessel which took us to the fringe & back of Black Rock City. Danny, main mechanic and co-creator of Janky Barge also joins us to illuminate the birthing concepts behind the 40+ foot long, 20 ton beauty. Although Z-Note could not make it out to the burn this year, he co-pilots on the voyage–and in true Janky fashion we experience technical difficulty toward the end of his set (see you got the Janky in ya Z-Note!)

If you’re interested in some real Janky action catch the Barge as it cruises around this year’s SF Love Parade, Saturday Oct.3…

Also, big ups! to the Fringe crew for providing raucous times, support and always positivity while we rode the Janky, kicked it at camp, or on adventures. I hope you enjoy the stories and tunes behind this two-hour tour as we honor one another’s experience and the Barge, which for many of us became a beacon of light as we wandered the desert.

Look Ma I’m on a Barge! Bless,
Our eyes pierce the window of the world from close to far. Our ears capture the smallest vibrations in the air. With tongue and nose we indulge in the flavors of this earth. And our bodies lunge into textures fine and grainy, substances liquid and solid. But the senses do not always divide so cleanly. Sounds, colors, substance, and audible vibration blend in the most fascinating ways within the neural pathways. We might feel the wretched smell of the Civic Center metro station, hear the ringing heat of a tumultuous sun, or like Nabakov, visually associate letters with colors. And music too often evokes impressions beyond the strictly audible, from raw feelings to colors and smells to tastes. In fact, music lies deep within the realms of synesthesia, where the expression of the world and human body meet in an ever dynamic, nebulous intertwining.

For this week’s episode in dedication to the phenomenon of synesthesia, we decide to select some synth based tunes and variations thereof that might just impress your skull with bubbling colors. I (Z Nooooooote) hold down the Sang crew solo for this one. Honey Knucks and Aisha are busy melting their brains in the desert, and Shelmatic has peaced to Lala land. So enjoy my shit! Expect some jazz-funk masterpieces, sultry boogie nastiness, and dub-step erotica. But I’m much more excited to mention that Luis Vasquez joins me in the studio to guest select a synth-wave radiality and introduce one of his many projects, The Soft Moon, to all listeners here and far. We discuss the immediacy of creative expression and the hindsight of categories and genres. And we chop it up about some of Luis’ most imaginative sonic muses. The Soft Moon debut full length will come out some time in the winter with a tentative November date, so stay tuned!

I apologize for the louder than necessary background volume over some of our vocals, you’ll have to fill in he gaps of the conversations. It’s an experiment in audience participation really. Tell us what you see. For me it’s a lot of burgundy stained indigo with a sludge water consistency.

Spank Bank…Honey Knuckles…Sass Appeal…Lokae & Joe Mousepad…these are the contenders on today’s episode of Sanguine Soul, the Royal Rumble. That’s right. Tonight, in absence of Aisha, Shelmatic, and Z-Note, Honey Knuckles uses his powers to summon some sonically sick DJ’s to bring it. In one corner, we have Spank Bank, beginning our evening with an epic electro earfuck. Next, Honey Knuckles floats onto the floor and drops a little hip hop, funk, and world rhythms for your aural pleasure. Expect some new joints by the Quantic crew and a few remix heaters. After a brief intermission, Sass Appeal brings it hard with her sultry smooth tech house set. And closing out the Rumble, DJ Lokae and emcee J. Mousepad (Lok-Pad) destroy it on Ableton, a mic, and a Kaoss pad.

Sanguine Soul thanks all the artists who represented their style on the Rumble. We hope you appreciate and enjoy this diverse session, and thanks for listening.

The intertwining of drums and fire date back to ancient days of story telling and human expression. Crackling flames spin in a symbiotic dance upon the backbone of frenetic drum licks. Channeling this spirit, Sanguine Soul decided to conceptualize a “drums and fire” theme. We experimented with light blue flames burgeoning into ferocious fires, all supplemented by a dynamic range of drum energy levels.

The Gaslamp Killer jumping in your face

I (Z Note) jump off the session with vortex breaks from DJ Shadow, Jean-Pierre Massiera’s wondrous disco, and Free The Robot’s electric jazz funk. At half time, LA’s own fanatic of drums and fire straight out of the Low End Theory, The Gaslamp Killer, joins us for a brief Q&A. We talk about his beginnings as a DJ in San Diego, where his production is taking him, and the influences behind his feral mixtape masterpieces, sojourning through global psych, cackling drums, freaked out atmospherics, and laser heavy dub-step madness. Be sure to peep his new mixtape Hell And The Lake Of Fire Are Waiting For You! and stay tuned for the upcoming ep My Troubled Mind (Brainfeeder) to be released on Aug. 4.

Our absentee Honey Knuckles premixes some burners for your listening calisthenics. He takes us to the hypnotic south of Asia with Deejay Om, Nickodemus connects Brooklyn and Romania, and Afrika Bambaataa beams us up to another fucking dimension of sound. Shelmatic keeps the background jazzy drum kicks locked down with Pete Rock’s Petestrumentals (Bbe, 2001). Tell us what you think of this episode yall!

peace and bless 1

Babel Rhythms

Here at Moss Street Studios we’re all about stretching our ear holes into the far reaches of our outer soul. While some tend towards plugs for such stretch armstrong feats, we prefer expansion by way of rhythmic vibration. Call it aural exercise. And if you would be so generous to flex your inner lobes with us, then allow us to take on the role as your slightly offbeat, soul sonic yoga instructors.

In this episode of Sanguine Sunday we teeter on the limit zones of the funk. Whether meandering along the electro-soul of Little Dragon reworked into a synth heavy jazz groove by Floating Points, traversing the uncannily dank texture of Asha Puhtli’s resonant vocals, or bear witnessing to Man Parrish blurring supposedly tight packaged color and orientation lines with his idiosyncratic brand of electro-funk, this mix lingers on the slippery dynamism of concept and sound.

Oscillating between the sonance of the traditional and the new–brushing the past with fresh meaning in contemporary combinations while informing the inchoate feel of the novel with its heritage–we do not shy away from evolving montages of beat and melody. That’s where Babel Rythms comes in. From the dusty ruins to the rebuilt heights of the Tower of Babel, to the oftentimes forgotten fact that music is the lone universal language which even divine punishment neglected, the funk endlessly babbles up into nascent forms of roots music.

And so, we bring you a feature on the burgeoning sound of Dub-Step orchestrated by local enthusiast, grand mixer, and up and coming producer, Lokae (AKA BOOM LOLO). Originally hailing from the grimey back waters of East London, the dissonant boom bap rhythms of Dub-Step has swooped down into the sewage spills of the San Francisco Bay with the force of a ravenous mutant sea gull, this shit is real. Turn it up! Time to exercise the them ear holes, ‘cus in a reworking of DOOM’s words, we got more soul than a hole in sock. And like a black hole engulfing intergalactic trash, that hole can’t stop won’t stop unraveling at the seams.

Like what you hear? Peep Lokae’s original styles Babel Funk mix for a sound lesson in dub-step, glitch, and fidget.
