i·rie [I' -ree]
-adjective
to be at total peace with your current state of being. The way you feel when you have no worries

What is Irie Revolution? DJ Lapu Lapu (aka Brother K), DJ, educator, creator of Roots Kommunikations on KPFA radio, and all around knowledgeable man breaks it down on the decks. Perhaps it’s the laid back roots rhythms counteracting structured capitalist thought, or maybe it’s the spiritual vibes flowing free of puritanical dogma. No matter how you interpret it, this irie revolution begins with open ears and indigenous voices echoing from an ancient hero‘s DNA.

Much love and thanks to Brother K and Brother Lenz for stopping by. K is so down that even Boots Riley of The Coup had to stop by and give props!

In our first set, Honey Knuckles drops some new jams from Aloe Blacc, Mux Mool, and Sub Swara.
Keeping to the stride of la Familia, we welcome Sanguine cousin, Spank Bank playing under the moniker Mack Lau. He drops a classic funk and 80′s set. Tying things together, Mama Feelgood gives props to her Moreno Valley fam, and features tracks from hometown heroes Afta-1 and Stereodojo.

For this week’s episode we tried out something new. Shelmatic jumbled some marbles in her mouth through the whole show, and I (Z Note waxing digital right here) tried to conjure strange words in a fruitless effort to describe the music of Bay Area experimental indie band Birds & Batteries. Who wants to be boxed into the silly expressive powers of language anyway? Band frontman and vocalist, Michael Sempert, dropped in to select some Eritrean drum machine tunes and tell us a bit about B&B’s latest EP, Up To No Good, a minimal funk synth effort that instills magnetizing images of an enchanted forest where the flora and fauna are actually robotic manifestations projected from the mind of a twisted hillside gnome–a psychotic little creature with dark intentions and yet, the pathos of a P Funk, cosmic liberator. It’s really a very satisfying combination of sounds. Imagine if John Carpenter produced the soundtrack to Lord of the Rings in the early 80s. Or consider a prismatic focus into one corner of David Bowie’s labyrinthian monsters.

In the spirit of layering the organic with the electric, we happily conceptualize this episode Verdant Volts, a certain tongue twister for our mush mouthed Shelmatictron. And, yet she still carries the torch, saying much wiser things than I. In the second half of the show I suspend my cationic words in favor of spinning some tunes, intertwining psychedelic jazz, post-punk electronica, abstract beats, and a bit of funkified disco for ya’ll. Enjoy!

After a 2 week hiatus, we are back! We hope you had good times closing out the decade because it’s been a great genesis for us, and we’re grateful that Sanguine Soul had a place in your heart last year. To celebrate the birth of 2010, we decided to forgo the expected decade in review or top 50 list and instead, decided to throw a theme of the abstract variety in your direction: Liquid Alchemy. Special guest U9Lift joins the Sanguine team for a live set, transforming original beats with samples and acapellas to create his own form of musical gold. As usual, Z-Note and Honey Knucks dispel their own brand of magic on the decks to show you their interpretation of the theme. So as you consume our first show of the decade, what is your liquid alchemy?

For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere the winter solstice is but on the horizon, changing seasons, perceptions of light and dark, and heralding atmospheric water phenomena. This week we team with our Slayers Club homeboys Manitous and Joe Mousepad in channeling the hydrometeoric energies that have graced our skin and streets, in what we present as our ode to precipitation.

I make our boys blush with some sassy commentary on loving the sultry slickness that Honey Knuckles turned on with the lo-fi oscillations from Natural Self and the funky vocal cataclysm of Alice Russell’s “A Fly in the Hand”. Ohhhh let me warn you, before you have a chance to dry, Joe Mousepad and Manitous brings on more of the wet stuff with their fingers on our sonic trigger! Mousepad drizzles us with a KAOSS-filled jam session along side an Amazonian Rainforest set that goes everywhere from Souls of Mischief to Mux Mool, deluged to us by none other than Mr. Manitous!

Relish the soak from our ode to the element that keeps us flowing, heart’s rivers wide, allowing us another lovely motivation to hold onto the ones that warm us…enjoy with love!

Heart flowing,

Halloween gave us Sanguine Soulsters a chance to play some of the freakier — and creepier — tunes that we usually don’t get a chance to bump on the show. From Blowfly’s “Fuck The Devil” to Mobb Deep’s “Shook Ones Pt. II” we take you down a sometimes funny, occasionally scary, and once in awhile absolutely frightening journey through the concept of hauntology. Halloween is an uncanny night where we are encouraged to wear masks and channel the specters of the past or take on the altar personae of what we would like to be. Much of today’s electronic music, from the sample based form of hip-hop to dub-step’s haunted memories of the future, do the same. So, we explore this spirit of the mask with ghostly rhythms and wraithful melodies. Be forewarned, this mix might shake you!

Our eyes pierce the window of the world from close to far. Our ears capture the smallest vibrations in the air. With tongue and nose we indulge in the flavors of this earth. And our bodies lunge into textures fine and grainy, substances liquid and solid. But the senses do not always divide so cleanly. Sounds, colors, substance, and audible vibration blend in the most fascinating ways within the neural pathways. We might feel the wretched smell of the Civic Center metro station, hear the ringing heat of a tumultuous sun, or like Nabakov, visually associate letters with colors. And music too often evokes impressions beyond the strictly audible, from raw feelings to colors and smells to tastes. In fact, music lies deep within the realms of synesthesia, where the expression of the world and human body meet in an ever dynamic, nebulous intertwining.

For this week’s episode in dedication to the phenomenon of synesthesia, we decide to select some synth based tunes and variations thereof that might just impress your skull with bubbling colors. I (Z Nooooooote) hold down the Sang crew solo for this one. Honey Knucks and Aisha are busy melting their brains in the desert, and Shelmatic has peaced to Lala land. So enjoy my shit! Expect some jazz-funk masterpieces, sultry boogie nastiness, and dub-step erotica. But I’m much more excited to mention that Luis Vasquez joins me in the studio to guest select a synth-wave radiality and introduce one of his many projects, The Soft Moon, to all listeners here and far. We discuss the immediacy of creative expression and the hindsight of categories and genres. And we chop it up about some of Luis’ most imaginative sonic muses. The Soft Moon debut full length will come out some time in the winter with a tentative November date, so stay tuned!

I apologize for the louder than necessary background volume over some of our vocals, you’ll have to fill in he gaps of the conversations. It’s an experiment in audience participation really. Tell us what you see. For me it’s a lot of burgundy stained indigo with a sludge water consistency.

Feeling the oncoming flight of our dear friend/co-host Shelmatic from our San Francisco local we decided to throwdown a special four hour global party combined with Pirate Cat Radio’s Hetero-topia. YES, four hours of us–Sanguine Souls’ Aisha, Honey Knuckles, Shelmatic, Z-Note, with Hetero-topia’s DJ Asik and Shinobi 009–kicking it and playing whatever we had in our stash of records, cds, and mp3s. Celebrating the vast physical realm we reside within–from terrain covering lush jungles and fathomless depths of deep, we bring the colors of this beautiful globe’s plethora of ethnolinguistic communities. Tapping into the sonic variance from the traditional, to tracks fused with a synergy of cultures, we represent regions that may seem like they are a great distance from us, but in reality are very close–only a few boom-bapping beats and soulful notes away.

Dematerializing from our Mission District studio we rematerialize deep into Eastern Europe with Shelmatic’s selection of Turkish Sufi psyche via Baba Zula. Deciding to turn up the heat we head to Sur de America where Mama FeelGood sends us soul tapping with the sensuous nuevo bossa nova of CéU. Within the Brazilian realm, reminding us of music’s ability to infuse hope and inspire strength for resistance, Z-Note drops the subtle rebellion of Arthur Verocai. Continuing our transport, Shinobi 009 shares solidarity with our brothers and sisters in South/South East Asia with his own Thai inspired Oillie Feelingz: Bangkok Thoughts. Always bringing it, Honey Knuckles sends us into the little known world of Angloa dance with a torso tinging grit of a track Kurum from Buraka Som Sistema.

I could go on for hours and hours listing our highlights, but why would I do that when you can press play and teleport for yourself?
Ya’ll know you’re hungry to go–I know I am! So yeeesss, let’s go for it!

With light and laughter,

The marriage between music and drugs is a complex, conflicted, and potent relationship. Much like a drug, music can dissolve the sensual surrounding of a listener, fragmenting that reality under the influence of resonating vibration and rhythm. A wondrous mythos surrounds modern musicianship and drug use. We speculate about a musician’s drug use and reflect on the best fit between particular drug and genre of music; ecstasy and electronic music, psychedelic and well psychedelia, hip-hop and chronic, just to name a few of the most popular. Musicians often sing about drugs or equate their rhymes and rhythms to the effects of hypnotic chemicals. But we also acknowledge that music can take you there all by itself without any need for the help of external substances.

On the social level, the contemporary glorification of the drug dealer’s hustle pervades our urban centers and captures the imagination of so-seeming innocuous suburbanites. Whether embodied by Notorious BIG’s “Ten Crack Commandments” or Clipse’s more recent “Grindin’”, the seduction of the pusher’s intense lifestyle and Scarface style obsession with the American dream still colors America’s collective imaginaire. But the rejection of these archetypes and unveiling of the broader political implications behind it push forward as well, as seen in the sounds of Nina Simone’s “Pusher” and Immortal Technique’s “Peruvian Cocaine”. Honey Knucles and myself, the humble magnificent Z Note try to sketch out these multifaceted levels of the modern marriage between drugs and music. Quasimoto’s The Unseen (Stones Throw, 2000) provide the background instrumentals — a Madlib effort famously orchestrated while the musician binged on psyclobin mushrooms and other magic potions.

As if all that wasn’t enough, we also feature a special guest for this week, New York DJ and beatsmith Las Flores Project! Mic Mistress Aisha and Honey Knucks host a prerecorded interview with LFP and discuss the legacy of David Axelrod and DJ Shadow as well as the future of musicianship. Las Flores also blesses the decks with a mad decent set, introducing us to his lush grooves and swishing, wildlife soundscapes. His wavelength is certainly another reminder that music can take you higher–all by way of its own powers–to an ephemeral place of euphoria, adventure and novelty.

Oh, and we’re still trying to find a song that personifies a male love interest as a drug. Think Rick James’ “Mary Jane” but using a masculine metaphor. Who’s got it?

Peace and bless 1!

She’s back! After what seemed like a forever hiatus to complete her documentary and deal with some craziness in life, our very own Mama FeelGood, Aisha, returns with a savory emetic energy reflecting our Power Within theme. What–Power Within? Yes, your power, from deep in your core, pulsing in every capillary, every cell, you’ve got a power unrestricted son!

Ripping the air out of the room with a short but amazing set, Z-Note opens the evening truly bringing the power and sends it resonating with a remix of Roy Ayers’ I Am Your Mind.

Continuing the herald, DJ Pandaman–aka scholar-warrior Sam Tripp kicks us a set spanning his roots with rare groove into tracks from his collaborative effort the Pinky Ring Project. Sam also Blam-Pows! some heavy knowledge sharing his experience studying Chinese martial arts at Wudong Mountain–yes the kung-fu school that inspired the Wu-Tang clan and the mountaintop monastery featured in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and his life’s passion the Black Lotus Chinese Martial Arts Association. For more information about Sam’s extraordinary exploits and to read his scholar-warrior martial arts blog.

Feeling the awesomeness carried over from Z-note and Pandaman, Honey Knuckles delivers some righteously ferocious womb power with divas of soul Alice Russell and Marva Whitney.

Never letting us down, our sound ninja and local pulsomotrist Shelmatic electrifies us with tracks from experimental electronica-pop artists Air.

Oh yea, we can’t forget giving props to our Sanguine Cousins Aakash, Brandon, Edwin, and Oscar for kicking it with us in the cafe/studio and bringing the laughs, beer, and tacos!

It was a lively comeback party packed with soul–perfectly expressed in the Pilipino rally chant for the fighting spirit of life, Ma-Bu-Hay! Hay! Hay!, we celebrate the return of Mama FeelGood!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; face melting music is a state of mind beyond states of mind; a music outside of music; a formula underneath all formulas. The shit just rips you outside of yourself, throws you into a warp hole, and spits you back out in clothes you’ve never seen before, a parched body that looks strangely unfamiliar (like going through puberty all over again), and a brain state that rings out of wack like you just woke up from a 17 hour dream about whirling supernovae explosions that you hear with your mouth and see from your toenails. Call it musical surrealism — or maybe it’s simply insane. What’s the difference anyway?

When the Lumerians make geometry explode

In tribute to face melting music of the 5th dimension, we put together a double edged show with the A-side “Space Mountain Madness” and B-side “Oscillating Brainwaves”. This episode is named by our special guests, mad decent Bay Area psychedelic outfit the Lumerians. We attempt a Q&A mid session, but the Lumerians prefer to play music rather than talk about it (at least this time around), unless they’re making jokes or impressively having three conversations at once. It must be the psych.

The Lumerians drop some new tracks off their upcoming full length LP, the percussive hypnotics of “Melting Space” and “Xulu”, as well as a couple off their original self-titled EP from last year. We then switch in and out of fuzzed out Turkish psych, experimental French ridiculousness, and Nigerian rhythms set to put you in a hex. Honey Knuckles and I (Z Note) open and close the show respectively with heavy percussive psych breaks, chanting funk grooves, and other attempts at face melters. Shelmatic tunes in with some of Dr. Octagon’s illustriously blunted instrumentals, setting the mood for a way out there show.

Prepare to oscillate your brainwaves in this sojourn through space mountain madness.

The intertwining of drums and fire date back to ancient days of story telling and human expression. Crackling flames spin in a symbiotic dance upon the backbone of frenetic drum licks. Channeling this spirit, Sanguine Soul decided to conceptualize a “drums and fire” theme. We experimented with light blue flames burgeoning into ferocious fires, all supplemented by a dynamic range of drum energy levels.

The Gaslamp Killer jumping in your face

I (Z Note) jump off the session with vortex breaks from DJ Shadow, Jean-Pierre Massiera’s wondrous disco, and Free The Robot’s electric jazz funk. At half time, LA’s own fanatic of drums and fire straight out of the Low End Theory, The Gaslamp Killer, joins us for a brief Q&A. We talk about his beginnings as a DJ in San Diego, where his production is taking him, and the influences behind his feral mixtape masterpieces, sojourning through global psych, cackling drums, freaked out atmospherics, and laser heavy dub-step madness. Be sure to peep his new mixtape Hell And The Lake Of Fire Are Waiting For You! and stay tuned for the upcoming ep My Troubled Mind (Brainfeeder) to be released on Aug. 4.

Our absentee Honey Knuckles premixes some burners for your listening calisthenics. He takes us to the hypnotic south of Asia with Deejay Om, Nickodemus connects Brooklyn and Romania, and Afrika Bambaataa beams us up to another fucking dimension of sound. Shelmatic keeps the background jazzy drum kicks locked down with Pete Rock’s Petestrumentals (Bbe, 2001). Tell us what you think of this episode yall!

Human creativity is pushed into new realms on this week’s episode, Limit Zones.
In a world limited by constraints in the form of laws, labels, and rules, the sanguine family sets out to investigate artists who they think have pushed their artistic creations beyond the normal conventions of their times, thus pushing past their limit zones.
We begin as Shelmatic sets the mood of our conversations by featuring tracks from the always innovative Cinematic Orchestra.
Honey Knuckles rallies legendary composers, Ramsey Lewis, Stan Getz, and Gary Bartz to enrapture us in some sonic serenity, and the Philipians drop a Pharcyde remix treat. Next up we invite the talented musician, Emily Wells, for a conversation about creating music, unconstrained by genre or labels. Be sure to cop her new EP, Dirty, available on iTunes now. Z-Note finishes the evening by rounding up some of today’s best beatsmiths for a treasure chest of head nod. New Dilla and Quik tracks are just a few of the gems you’ll discover.

Life pulsates at the speed of pushing pavements—foot to grind moving to your core’s cadence, while others peddle and postpone perched above saddles, some beat urgent blaps of car horns, as bus carriages screaming for passengers lurch to consume them then revive…We are the flesh moving about this concrete labyrinth, through and between miraculous painted lines—or ignoring these boundaries laughing as lights flashing white men and red hands tell us when to go…Don’t get my drab tone wrong, there is beauty to this grid. The way we’re stacked upon one another—the vibrancy of every culture breathing, eating, loving amongst one another…

Let us celebrate the manic depressive ride of city life—the voluptuous highs and gritty gritty lows. Aisha, a rose growing out of the concrete, brings it hard with a special flow paying tribute to the splendorous energy of our metropolitan area. As Honey Knuckles takes us on a drop-of-the-dime safari through sonic textures as equally rough and wondrous as El-P’s T.O.J—weaving us in and out of architecturally abrupt changes.

Never letting us forget that concrete living is one of magic as well as grind, Z-Note packages the essence of inner-city turbulence and electricity from the souls of artists who were grown within the magical belly of pavement beasts—from the pensive instrumentals of Universal Magnetic to Fatima’s wailing Wildchild Z-Note channels city chi to and within us without fail. Also, never failing us with knowledge on the local, our very own urbanista extraordinaire Shelmatic not only updates our pulses, but challenges us to mind marinate on the art of piecing.

Transportation

Arriving at our eighth episode strong, we at Moss Street Studios decided to take a step back and wonder, how did we get here? But instead of giving you a stale linear narrative connecting the dots from point A to episode 8, we decided in good Sang Sun fashion to get abstract on yo’ ass. For episode eight, we pay tribute to the many modes of transportation that take us from ‘here’ to ‘there.’ Often taken for granted if not straight up neglected and spat upon (have you seen the 14?), transportation can get a hard rap. But whether you get your move on around this world by foot or double dutch bus, train or scraper bike, airplane or spaceship, roller skate or hover craft, there’s always a way to funkify your spacial travellin’.

If your daily grind ever feels a little too boring, or if the idea of exploring new lands does not seem to get you out of bed, then well, let your mind take you elsewhere. Aisha baptizes it “movementation,” (another word added to the Sanguinetionary), let’s just define it as the art of movement. And what better way to praise movementation than through one of its most celebrated conjurations? Music. Let music into your life and it will teleport you within instants across the seven seas and throughout the depths of time.

So, join us in this episode of Sanguine Sunday on an imaginative odyssey, flowing seamlessly from David Axelrod’s masterful “The Mental Traveler”. Z-Note plays up the theme that nothing takes us spacio-time traveling quite like bumping the memory lane of music, transporting us to the raw feelings of distant places and far off times. We take stops along the journey at essential Hiphop junctures, from the heart of beef with Juice Crew’s “The Bridge is Over” to Quasimoto’s drowsy escape from the cops in “Come on Feet”. Afterwards, our guest of the week, David Snyder, transportation policy director at SPUR (San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association), grounds us in the current state of and hopeful future for transportation in the city. Honey Knucks flips the ground mobility tunes into a provocative dance grind in the spirit of Betty Davis’ nasty seduction, “Walkin’ Up the Rode”. Keepin’ it movin’, two step yourself into the world of Dre’s “Let me Ride” monster back beat, getting sticky with the sub-woofers under the sheets. Finally, we pull up into the local pulse station where Shelmatic suggests some future destinations for sonic voyagin’. Mode of transportation? All yours.

Cosmic Vibrations

Yo soul journiers…Please make sure that your valuables are stowed in the compartments overhead and that your persons are securely fastened, because this week we are taking you on an extraterrestrial inter-nebular spacial odyssey. Oh Yes, let us disclose that you will feel disconnection from the turf below as your reality shifts—yet, no need to trip, it’s just a minor side effect of zero gravity while you enter Psycho-galactic Stargate Sanguine.

This episode our eccentricity is as vast as the Sirius star system. Borg Queen Aisha secures our collective entity as the most powerful force anyone may encounter, as Federation Captain Honey Knuckles ignites from the funky wobbly-wobbles of Milez Benjiman, through haunting jazz vocals of Asha Puthi. He also navigates us through the asteroidal storm that our guest co-navigator Oscar “the Wild” Medina beams into the path of Sanguine. Tapping into his Telepathic Empath powers Znote senses our sublunary loss as an empowering gift—realizing that we can only progress by going beyond—he sonogramally projects the awareness and peace theology of Sun Ra in IG Cultures’s Ra Bops In Blacknuss, and motivates our transformative properties with the move-your-booty-baps of Afrika Bambataa. Although we voyage into higher reaches beyond our solar system Stargate Sanguine would not be at homeostasis without a report of our local pulse, presented by our Solarsonic Engineer Shelmatic.

Let us be the bearers of soul-sonic cosmic sensuality…Rest assured, your best interest is in the forefront of our minds, thus feel more than welcome to fully recline, respite from your alpha-wave activity, and centrifugally chillax as our journey unfolds.

Babel Rhythms

Here at Moss Street Studios we’re all about stretching our ear holes into the far reaches of our outer soul. While some tend towards plugs for such stretch armstrong feats, we prefer expansion by way of rhythmic vibration. Call it aural exercise. And if you would be so generous to flex your inner lobes with us, then allow us to take on the role as your slightly offbeat, soul sonic yoga instructors.

In this episode of Sanguine Sunday we teeter on the limit zones of the funk. Whether meandering along the electro-soul of Little Dragon reworked into a synth heavy jazz groove by Floating Points, traversing the uncannily dank texture of Asha Puhtli’s resonant vocals, or bear witnessing to Man Parrish blurring supposedly tight packaged color and orientation lines with his idiosyncratic brand of electro-funk, this mix lingers on the slippery dynamism of concept and sound.

Oscillating between the sonance of the traditional and the new–brushing the past with fresh meaning in contemporary combinations while informing the inchoate feel of the novel with its heritage–we do not shy away from evolving montages of beat and melody. That’s where Babel Rythms comes in. From the dusty ruins to the rebuilt heights of the Tower of Babel, to the oftentimes forgotten fact that music is the lone universal language which even divine punishment neglected, the funk endlessly babbles up into nascent forms of roots music.

And so, we bring you a feature on the burgeoning sound of Dub-Step orchestrated by local enthusiast, grand mixer, and up and coming producer, Lokae (AKA BOOM LOLO). Originally hailing from the grimey back waters of East London, the dissonant boom bap rhythms of Dub-Step has swooped down into the sewage spills of the San Francisco Bay with the force of a ravenous mutant sea gull, this shit is real. Turn it up! Time to exercise the them ear holes, ‘cus in a reworking of DOOM’s words, we got more soul than a hole in sock. And like a black hole engulfing intergalactic trash, that hole can’t stop won’t stop unraveling at the seams.

Like what you hear? Peep Lokae’s original styles Babel Funk mix for a sound lesson in dub-step, glitch, and fidget.

There ain’t no denying that folks from all walks of life–those nestled at the coast, perched in the hills, to the salts of the earth spread over heartland and valleys–are tuned into its frequency. We’re talking about the throb-throb in your chest that connects each ventricle’s eighth note to California’s veracity. This week, the shrine of Sanguine delivers sound escapes generated circa Cali’s geographic identities–allowing us to kick back and meditate on the miraculousness of her musical births while ameliorating some of toil’s stresses.

As Marlena Shaw elucidates, “It’s like the sound you hear that lingers in your ear / That you can’t forget from sundown to sunset. . .” ya’ll know it–the pulse reverberating via sea breaks on an endless shore, the rolling hills that abrupt or mature into mountainous Sierras, the every shade of emerald gesturing you to partake in sticky sweet inhales, the sun-loved earth mirroring skin tones while reflecting warmth into desert skies. These tracks just don’t hit our eardrums, they reverberate through our veins and capillaries. Just as each individual is separate yet whole, the bounty of California’s sonorousness are distinctive however united through her splendor.

Let us connect between our geographic and reflective states as Aisha moderates the sanctity of the Sanguine. Beginning our mientes melodic massage Honey Knuckles awakens our third eyes with love from the Yay. Recent Oakland resident transplanted to LA, DJ Phatrick syncs-in conjoining our worlds by juxtaposing Cali’s polars. Continuing our rhythmic meditations, Z-Note sends us on explorations through southern sonance. And though we could infinitely continue into resonance, Shelmatic centers our awareness back into our locality with a community mantra.

As the nation ushers in a new presidency and perhaps even a new generation of politics, the Sanguine Sunday crew takes some time to contemplate the last eight roller coasting years. Music of the 21st century certainly reflects the war torn, economically worn out, socially destraught zeitgeist.

The sonic waves can get political in protean fashion, balancing out an aural spectrum that ranges from social rhetoric in rhyme to personal meditation in rhythm. We want to share with you some of the recent frequencies that hum with (or shove up against) these political vibrations, and we also dig a little deeper to kick up some of the dusty records that still push relevant social criticism while hungering for the knowledge of self that makes change from the bottom up–that expand the mental type flow. Listening to these joints reminds us that a good many struggles continue to this day despite any claims on our supposed linear progress. Yet, music shines through, dealing out a hopeful healing power in uplifting sound, rejoicing in the exquisite joy of life through a heartbeat drum and celestial word play.

Live from Washington D.C. our private contact “Henry” tells us about the excitement currently bubbling up in our nation’s capital and what we might expect to see in the near future of Obama’s administration. Back in the studio, Aisha demonstrates her ‘each one teach one’ ethos in reading some powerful letters written to President Obama from her middle school students who themselves do not shy away from the exhileration of this time. Finally, we would like to introduce to our audience Shelmatic, who will be holding down the grind on the local beat.

We’ve been trying to orchestrate a podcast feed, but such a feat combined with the time consuming ventures in learning sound editing via logic, has postponed our new years mix so long that well, it’s almost 2010 already. Granted it’s only the middle of the month, there ain’t going be another day to wait for us to throw down our mix… Soooo…

Let’s get down to the program. In the spirit of the new horizon set forth by 2009, Honey Knuckles cuts up some soul collaborated proto-break tunes–putting emphasis on the afro-beat, disco, and krautrock sectors–with the resolution of improving his b-boy technique in the cypha’. And I (Z-Noooote) take the year of recession to reflect upon the magical quality of money. In resolving that it’s time to either find a hustle or make some more cash money in recession times, or less ambitiously, just wondering about the poetics of the dollar bill, I find some inspiration in a collection of cross-genre dollar lamentations, on the grind motivations, and fuzzed out flows flipped up for my own purposes. Finally, Aisha rocks steady with some knowledge on the Oscar Grant protest in Oakland and the perennial abuse of police authority in the inner city. Let the chi flow!

Much resource is to be found in the rich history of music to help us make the resolute kind of resolution that will prove lasting. So peep that shit. And tell us about your transformations.
