For the 63rd Sanguine Soul, Honey Knuckles and Mama FeelGood attempt to pay homage to their former east bay city of residence. The Town, Funk Town, OakTown, The O, however you rep it, Oakland has and continues to be a center of art, soul, and cultural diversity. Often written off as the “ghetto” counterpart of San Francisco, this show aims to break down this racist stigma and remind folks that Oakland is a place where revolutionary thought and practice is part of history, where Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton started the first Free Breakfast for School Children Program (later adopted by the Federal government), where Bruce Lee began teaching Jee Kune Do to non-Chinese against the will of the conservative Chinese community, and where some of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods exist and create art. Today, the east bay mecca has seen a revival in it’s nightlife and music, with the reopening of the historic Fox Theater and new venues sprouting each month.

It is tough to pay homage to The Town in 2 hours, but luckily we had some help from our homie Aebldee. The man comes through legit, fitted with green and yellow and rockin’ an eclectic set of afro, funk, soul, hip hop, and…ah who cares about genres! The dude drops hella dope tracks, and it’s not in Oaktown fashion to trip about where things belong in the popular media. Yadadamean?

to be at total peace with your current state of being. The way you feel when you have no worries

What is Irie Revolution? DJ Lapu Lapu (aka Brother K), DJ, educator, creator of Roots Kommunikations on KPFA radio, and all around knowledgeable man breaks it down on the decks. Perhaps it’s the laid back roots rhythms counteracting structured capitalist thought, or maybe it’s the spiritual vibes flowing free of puritanical dogma. No matter how you interpret it, this irie revolution begins with open ears and indigenous voices echoing from an ancient hero‘s DNA.

Much love and thanks to Brother K and Brother Lenz for stopping by. K is so down that even Boots Riley of The Coup had to stop by and give props!

It’s February, the month of love, and Sanguine Soul starts it off right with an episode we call “Passing Me By”. Roughly inspired by the Pharcyde song about juvenile infatuation, we channel the youthful heart’s flutter and innocence into our music and present to you a show we can all desire…and secretly admire.

Z-Note kicks off the show with a tribute set paying homage to Dilla, Teddy, and Old Dirty. Next we welcome veteran DJ and producer fflood as he takes us through an enchanting journey starting with Alice Coltrane, weaving through jazz, soul, hip hop, and house vibes, and ending with the beautiful voice of Nina Simone (all using only vinyl). After the set, fflood talks to Mama FeelGood about his music, blog, and how he got his name. Honey Knuckles picks up where fflood left off and closes out the show with an uptempo house set of poly percussive rhythms to make you dance.

After a 2 week hiatus, we are back! We hope you had good times closing out the decade because it’s been a great genesis for us, and we’re grateful that Sanguine Soul had a place in your heart last year. To celebrate the birth of 2010, we decided to forgo the expected decade in review or top 50 list and instead, decided to throw a theme of the abstract variety in your direction: Liquid Alchemy. Special guest U9Lift joins the Sanguine team for a live set, transforming original beats with samples and acapellas to create his own form of musical gold. As usual, Z-Note and Honey Knucks dispel their own brand of magic on the decks to show you their interpretation of the theme. So as you consume our first show of the decade, what is your liquid alchemy?

For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere the winter solstice is but on the horizon, changing seasons, perceptions of light and dark, and heralding atmospheric water phenomena. This week we team with our Slayers Club homeboys Manitous and Joe Mousepad in channeling the hydrometeoric energies that have graced our skin and streets, in what we present as our ode to precipitation.

I make our boys blush with some sassy commentary on loving the sultry slickness that Honey Knuckles turned on with the lo-fi oscillations from Natural Self and the funky vocal cataclysm of Alice Russell’s “A Fly in the Hand”. Ohhhh let me warn you, before you have a chance to dry, Joe Mousepad and Manitous brings on more of the wet stuff with their fingers on our sonic trigger! Mousepad drizzles us with a KAOSS-filled jam session along side an Amazonian Rainforest set that goes everywhere from Souls of Mischief to Mux Mool, deluged to us by none other than Mr. Manitous!

Relish the soak from our ode to the element that keeps us flowing, heart’s rivers wide, allowing us another lovely motivation to hold onto the ones that warm us…enjoy with love!

Heart flowing,

Spank Bank…Honey Knuckles…Sass Appeal…Lokae & Joe Mousepad…these are the contenders on today’s episode of Sanguine Soul, the Royal Rumble. That’s right. Tonight, in absence of Aisha, Shelmatic, and Z-Note, Honey Knuckles uses his powers to summon some sonically sick DJ’s to bring it. In one corner, we have Spank Bank, beginning our evening with an epic electro earfuck. Next, Honey Knuckles floats onto the floor and drops a little hip hop, funk, and world rhythms for your aural pleasure. Expect some new joints by the Quantic crew and a few remix heaters. After a brief intermission, Sass Appeal brings it hard with her sultry smooth tech house set. And closing out the Rumble, DJ Lokae and emcee J. Mousepad (Lok-Pad) destroy it on Ableton, a mic, and a Kaoss pad.

Sanguine Soul thanks all the artists who represented their style on the Rumble. We hope you appreciate and enjoy this diverse session, and thanks for listening.

As San Francisco closes out a gloomier than usual July, we celebrate the source of life in this week’s theme, Sunshine. Tonight, it’s Mama FeelGood and Honey Knuckles holding it down in the studio.

On today’s episode, Aisha ascends us toward the solar nexus with the vibrant sounds of Yppa. Enveloping us in a state of luminescence, Honey Knuckles brings happy waves with the genius of Galt MacDermot’s Let the Sunshine In and the brightness of a classic Arrested Development track. Next we take a break with our homies from OM Records. These down to earth cats share their experiences in the music game and show us how a prominent record label can operate like a warm family. Although, Z-Note and Shelmatic are on a brief hiatus taking a sun ray seeking road trip up the Pacific coast, Z-Note leaves us with a sizzling prerecorded afro-beat session featuring the likes of Fela Kuti and Tony Allen. If you lack the opportunity to enjoy the sunshine right now, we hope this episode will bring in that sanguine sun. Thanks for listening.

She’s back! After what seemed like a forever hiatus to complete her documentary and deal with some craziness in life, our very own Mama FeelGood, Aisha, returns with a savory emetic energy reflecting our Power Within theme. What–Power Within? Yes, your power, from deep in your core, pulsing in every capillary, every cell, you’ve got a power unrestricted son!

Ripping the air out of the room with a short but amazing set, Z-Note opens the evening truly bringing the power and sends it resonating with a remix of Roy Ayers’ I Am Your Mind.

Continuing the herald, DJ Pandaman–aka scholar-warrior Sam Tripp kicks us a set spanning his roots with rare groove into tracks from his collaborative effort the Pinky Ring Project. Sam also Blam-Pows! some heavy knowledge sharing his experience studying Chinese martial arts at Wudong Mountain–yes the kung-fu school that inspired the Wu-Tang clan and the mountaintop monastery featured in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and his life’s passion the Black Lotus Chinese Martial Arts Association. For more information about Sam’s extraordinary exploits and to read his scholar-warrior martial arts blog.

Feeling the awesomeness carried over from Z-note and Pandaman, Honey Knuckles delivers some righteously ferocious womb power with divas of soul Alice Russell and Marva Whitney.

Never letting us down, our sound ninja and local pulsomotrist Shelmatic electrifies us with tracks from experimental electronica-pop artists Air.

Oh yea, we can’t forget giving props to our Sanguine Cousins Aakash, Brandon, Edwin, and Oscar for kicking it with us in the cafe/studio and bringing the laughs, beer, and tacos!

It was a lively comeback party packed with soul–perfectly expressed in the Pilipino rally chant for the fighting spirit of life, Ma-Bu-Hay! Hay! Hay!, we celebrate the return of Mama FeelGood!

Happy Holiday weekend! Whatever you celebrate, whether you recognize an independence day or the farce of July (wattup LA), we at Sanguine Soul are having a 3 day weekend summer madness BBQ. All beats be grillin!

While things got crackin in the mission with a little grassroots fire works poppin on every street corner, Honey Knuckles kicked off the evening with an extravaganza of assorted flavors. Expect some feel good music by Bill Withers, Jackson 5, and Nicole Willis with some hot summer Fela Kuti-inspired heaters sprinkled in between.

Z-Note keeps the decks hot with the classic Roy Ayers’ Everybody loves the Sunshine and continues the freshness with a track from Sa Ra.
Big ups to Shelmatic for featuring the audio pleasures of a Sanguine favorite, Dr. Who Dat aka Jneiro Jarel.

A couple weeks ago, HoneyKnuckles, ZNote and I, Shelmatic gathered together in the hot, sweaty Pirate Cat Radio studio to kick out some fresh world beats. Each cut it up in their own way, guiding us on an adventurous journey across the globe. Unfortunately, this beautiful episode was lost to us through the tangled web of technology and human error. Yearning to hear those songs again, we decided to bring it back this week with a Global Rhythms Redux edition.

We started off with the melodic and soothing sounds of UK’s Heliocentrics, who took us to a “Distant Star” and beyond with their stellar Out There album swaying throughout the show. Z-Note came prepared with an arsenal of funky balkan beats mixed with traditional sufi/modern electronic amalgamations created by several talented artists at Turkish DoubleMoon Records. HoneyKnuckles held his own with the brash, fun and outrageous Gogol Bordello and the dance inducing classic, Magdalenha by Sergio Mendez.

The interational vibrations in the studio were enhanced by special guests Diana Diroy and our very own Aisha Heredia. After treating us to a short preview of their upcoming documentary on women community leaders in the Phillipines, they spent some with us talking soup about the composition of the film, the conditions currently faced in the Phillipines and their personal goals for the documentary. Check out the debut this Saturday, June 13, 2009 at the Manilatown Heritage Foundation located at 868 Kearney (@ Jackson) from 4-6pm.
