Sampling and copywright law is her specialty other than mixing Roots music as a resident for Suryadub, at San Francisco’s Club Six. She was voted “Best Dance DJ of 2008″ by the readers of the SF Bay Guardian, and for sure does she have brains to match the talent. Ripley is a UC Berkeley Law student, who studied in Jamaica, and has a passion for bringing copyright truth to light. Honey Knuckles and Ripley have a timeless conversation about cultural appropriation and dissect the hypocrisy of how American music labels bitch about Jamaican artists remixing their artists when for years American and European labels have been sampling “world” beats while not caring about royalties or giving back to the communities from where they culturally appropriated.

Brooklyn based producers/DJs Patrick Rood aka The Captin and Luca Venezia aka Drop the Lime bring bass to our faces this week. The two hail from Trouble and Bass Records spinning what sounds like voices from other dimensions trapped in a sub woofer. These fellas are truly a vivacious pair—tag-teaming such a raucous set that keeping up with their beats would be difficult for those who think time and space are linear. I had the pleasure of raging with these gents in the Pirate Cat Radio café, and I must say that they bring nothing but raw energy. Drop the Lime graces us with something special from his upcoming January 2011 album, Hot As Hell. And The Captain brings ferocity so effortlessly that we are left searching for bass nevermore.

This week around we welcome editor, writer, and artist Johnny Ray Huston to guest host and share some sweet yet oh so lugubrious selections with the Sanguine Soul fam. We oriented this episode around Connie Converse’s “How Sad, How Lovely”, a theme set to help us indulge– deeply and magnificently– in our melancholia. Don’t worry though, such mournfulness does not come without its joy! As some writer out there mentioned, in reference to what some other writer said, “if you can’t exorcise your demons, exercise them. ”

Johnny proves to stretch our eclectic and expansive repertoire once again with some excellent picks across the rock, disco, and electronic spectrums, charting the many many ways to express sad/lovely emotional territory. And I, Z Note, help out once I finally get my laptop to work properly with the mixer (oh, pirate radio equipment). There’s a couple exclusive treats in the mix, from Soft Moon‘s introspective and haunted synth-wave to Alexis Penney‘s oceanic disco, and After Dark‘s demo thriller set to run chills down your voyeuristic cyborg heart. But, you have to listen until the end for those lovelies.

Spank Bank…Honey Knuckles…Sass Appeal…Lokae & Joe Mousepad…these are the contenders on today’s episode of Sanguine Soul, the Royal Rumble. That’s right. Tonight, in absence of Aisha, Shelmatic, and Z-Note, Honey Knuckles uses his powers to summon some sonically sick DJ’s to bring it. In one corner, we have Spank Bank, beginning our evening with an epic electro earfuck. Next, Honey Knuckles floats onto the floor and drops a little hip hop, funk, and world rhythms for your aural pleasure. Expect some new joints by the Quantic crew and a few remix heaters. After a brief intermission, Sass Appeal brings it hard with her sultry smooth tech house set. And closing out the Rumble, DJ Lokae and emcee J. Mousepad (Lok-Pad) destroy it on Ableton, a mic, and a Kaoss pad.

Sanguine Soul thanks all the artists who represented their style on the Rumble. We hope you appreciate and enjoy this diverse session, and thanks for listening.

This last Saturday, the Students for Hip Hop at UC Berkeley put on it’s 13 annual Hip Hop in the Park. For more than a decade, this free community event has featured live hip hop bands and emcees, graf artists, bboys, bgirls, and even some shit you’ve never seen before. Eager to get our dose of dopeness, the Sanguine Fam, sans our lovely lumpling making Aisha (*where’s Aisha?), arose early and left the rainy alleys of SOMA to watch J Boogie and the Dubtronic Science, Blu and Exile, Bambu, and many more rock People’s Park in Berkeley. The breakers displayed their dedication by risking injury and dancing in the rain, impromtu emcee cyphers formed, and the turnout was amazing despite the rain. A testament to what hip hop is all about: having fun and showing love for the art of community.

Many of us in the Sanguine Family have been fortunate enough to have been a part of this event through our affiliations with the Students for Hip Hop back in the day, and all us have love for events like this so this week’s episode is dedicated to theme of Hip Hop in the Park. So tune in as Z-Note stitches together old school funk rhythms with classic hip hop tracks from past and present, Exile avoids being eaten by a bulldog during his interview with Z-Note at People’s Park, Honey Knuckles pays tribute to the past artists of Hip Hop in the Park, and Shelmatic brings us back to the Bronx with some Diamond D instrumentals.

*Aisha is taking a Sanguine sabbatical to complete her documentary and will return to the show in July.

As we approach the end of 2008, the Moss Street family decides to do a little bit of winter cleaning of the freezer. Items included a bag labeled “meat”, kosher chicken that was once resurrected from the trash can, and mystery Filipino meat from our early 2008 excursion to Manilla Oriental Market. Memorable quote of the evening: “Does this meat have cheese in it?” “No.”
