This episode pays homage to those artists who created electronic music outside of the standard computer and software program. From analog synthesizers to vocoders, there exists a legacy of resourceful musicians that leveraged the technology of their time to bring their musical inspirations to life. On top of that, we welcome Aeion Solar (aka the Marquis DuQue) from Burning Man Information Radio to join us in shepherding today’s theme and helping us raise money for Pirate Cat Radio and BMIR-FM. The man is a true musical mind, bringing an eclectic and rare mix of funky electronic music.

If you are listening and would like to donate to Pirate Cat Radio for some much needed equipment, it’s not too late! You can send it via PayPal to BMIR@pobox.com or simply stop by the Pirate Cat Cafe at 2781 21st @ Florida in San Francisco. Any donation is appreciated. Keep independent radio stations alive!

Tis true, Earth has come a-calling! Before you could take a breather from the Haiti/Chile quakes came a new shake this past weekend. Much love to the folks in Calexico. To spin some light from these events, I’ve always thought of deconstructive natural phenomena as a catalyst for creation…let’s hope and send prayers to all of those whom have been affected in the past months, and allow the positivity—rebuilding, communities coming together for support, and stories of resistance to shine through. And just as recent earth shakes have paralleled the above Blackalicious lyrics, an organic creation is birthing this week—the Sky is Falling SFestival (can also check details below).

Our guest, Baraka Noel aka Mumbles is emcee, poet, performance artist, and grandmaster of this much needed festival for underground emcees. Mumbles hails from the collective We Are The Unreal, and has recently replanted roots in the bay after an almost year long tour canvassing the country with beautiful words and collaborating with other dope emcees. I juxtaposed Blackalicious’ Sky is Falling not only cause it shares a moniker with the festival, but because the spirit, voices, and creation story behind the fest stands in solidarity with those that survive and push to rebuild/recreate. Word, actualizing your heart’s passion into your daily grind, likens with the power of natural phenomena—it just needs incubation/collaboration/movement to be unleashed! Thus, inspiration for Sky is Falling SFestival loins from the souls’ thunder, quakes, from creation, collisions, and into what every local emcee needs to progress—community building.

Dance-catch you in the downpour,
Mama Feelgood

Great Integration is an understatement for our guests this week, not only did this crew of folks create a hip-hop opera called Great Integration—what they have achieved (and I’m still trying to wrap my brain around) is an apocalyptic, mystical, mold breaking, saga…yo this ain’t any ol’ Star Wars or Lord of Ring epic saga, it’s narrated by hip-hop emcee Kirby Dominant, unfolded by classical chamber Ensemble Mik Nawooj, and expressed viscerally via Push Dance Company. Based on Daoist perspectives of opening one’s self to creation and understanding forces of deconstruction, Great Integration will be presented to us in several parts (separate performances) that will climax at the end of the Mayan calendar (end of the world) in 2012!

I could summarize the piece but since my brain has not fully accepted the feat I’ll let an except of their press release say it best:

“…In this penultimate installment of the Mik Nawooj saga, Black Swordsman of dominance is chosen as the one to trigger the Great Integration of the world before the arrival of Celestial King. When all the 5 lords of material realm are conquered, the old world we know will merge into one and the Great Celestial King shall descend from 9th heaven to wipe out all the impurities of the world, thus creating a new world with brand new paradigm.”

And always rocking steady for ya, we have our very own Honey Knuckles representing his spin on integration with tracks Sun-Ra would love—melding afro-funk, jazz and a sprinkle of electronic production.

We thank our guests Christopher Nicolas, JooWan Kim, Raissa Simpson for spreading the word on Great Integration work as it was a truly opening and wonderful experience. Enjoy!

After spending a couple weeks roaming around the northwest exploring cities and forests alike, ZNote and I, Shelmatic, returned to our beautiful city of San Francisco and chopped it up on the air waves with an episode that put Ladies First. With Aisha and Honeyknuckles takin their turn in the forest this weekend, the two of held in down in the studio with a tribute to all the strong, beautiful talented female musicians that have shifted our worlds and our ears.

I wanted to take a moment to highlight the women that have influenced my music tastes as well as the way I live my life. This episode, I put together a wide and varying selection including the likes of Aretha Franklin, Roxanne Shante and Bjork. For possibly the first time on Sanguine Soul, we even took it to indie rock and my high school days with Rilo Kiley and Jenny Lewis. Z-Note followed up with a funkalicious set starting off with the talented Alice Russell and ending with Sanguine Soul favorite, powerhouse Lyn Collins. This all played over the melodic grooves of Stonesthrow musician and producer, Georgia Anne Muldrow. As our friend Jeremy said, “How can you go wrong when you end with Jefferson Airplane’s White Rabbit?” We agree.

Spank Bank…Honey Knuckles…Sass Appeal…Lokae & Joe Mousepad…these are the contenders on today’s episode of Sanguine Soul, the Royal Rumble. That’s right. Tonight, in absence of Aisha, Shelmatic, and Z-Note, Honey Knuckles uses his powers to summon some sonically sick DJ’s to bring it. In one corner, we have Spank Bank, beginning our evening with an epic electro earfuck. Next, Honey Knuckles floats onto the floor and drops a little hip hop, funk, and world rhythms for your aural pleasure. Expect some new joints by the Quantic crew and a few remix heaters. After a brief intermission, Sass Appeal brings it hard with her sultry smooth tech house set. And closing out the Rumble, DJ Lokae and emcee J. Mousepad (Lok-Pad) destroy it on Ableton, a mic, and a Kaoss pad.

Sanguine Soul thanks all the artists who represented their style on the Rumble. We hope you appreciate and enjoy this diverse session, and thanks for listening.

She’s back! After what seemed like a forever hiatus to complete her documentary and deal with some craziness in life, our very own Mama FeelGood, Aisha, returns with a savory emetic energy reflecting our Power Within theme. What–Power Within? Yes, your power, from deep in your core, pulsing in every capillary, every cell, you’ve got a power unrestricted son!

Ripping the air out of the room with a short but amazing set, Z-Note opens the evening truly bringing the power and sends it resonating with a remix of Roy Ayers’ I Am Your Mind.

Continuing the herald, DJ Pandaman–aka scholar-warrior Sam Tripp kicks us a set spanning his roots with rare groove into tracks from his collaborative effort the Pinky Ring Project. Sam also Blam-Pows! some heavy knowledge sharing his experience studying Chinese martial arts at Wudong Mountain–yes the kung-fu school that inspired the Wu-Tang clan and the mountaintop monastery featured in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and his life’s passion the Black Lotus Chinese Martial Arts Association. For more information about Sam’s extraordinary exploits and to read his scholar-warrior martial arts blog.

Feeling the awesomeness carried over from Z-note and Pandaman, Honey Knuckles delivers some righteously ferocious womb power with divas of soul Alice Russell and Marva Whitney.

Never letting us down, our sound ninja and local pulsomotrist Shelmatic electrifies us with tracks from experimental electronica-pop artists Air.

Oh yea, we can’t forget giving props to our Sanguine Cousins Aakash, Brandon, Edwin, and Oscar for kicking it with us in the cafe/studio and bringing the laughs, beer, and tacos!

It was a lively comeback party packed with soul–perfectly expressed in the Pilipino rally chant for the fighting spirit of life, Ma-Bu-Hay! Hay! Hay!, we celebrate the return of Mama FeelGood!
