Sanguine Soul gets bass heavy and grimy this week. First, Honey Knuckles drops some glitchy tracks for your enjoyment. A few favorites include Drop Bombs from Ben Samples and Timonkey’s Panther Beach. Next, Digital Rust stops by for a guest set featuring some never-heard-before original tracks. Be prepared for a set both obscene and beautiful. You might call it devastatingly pretty; we think of it as Magnificent Decay. By the way, the man was up until the wee hours finalizing these tracks; that’s some dedication!

For the 63rd Sanguine Soul, Honey Knuckles and Mama FeelGood attempt to pay homage to their former east bay city of residence. The Town, Funk Town, OakTown, The O, however you rep it, Oakland has and continues to be a center of art, soul, and cultural diversity. Often written off as the “ghetto” counterpart of San Francisco, this show aims to break down this racist stigma and remind folks that Oakland is a place where revolutionary thought and practice is part of history, where Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton started the first Free Breakfast for School Children Program (later adopted by the Federal government), where Bruce Lee began teaching Jee Kune Do to non-Chinese against the will of the conservative Chinese community, and where some of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods exist and create art. Today, the east bay mecca has seen a revival in it’s nightlife and music, with the reopening of the historic Fox Theater and new venues sprouting each month.

It is tough to pay homage to The Town in 2 hours, but luckily we had some help from our homie Aebldee. The man comes through legit, fitted with green and yellow and rockin’ an eclectic set of afro, funk, soul, hip hop, and…ah who cares about genres! The dude drops hella dope tracks, and it’s not in Oaktown fashion to trip about where things belong in the popular media. Yadadamean?

What is Irie Revolution? DJ Lapu Lapu (aka Brother K), DJ, educator, creator of Roots Kommunikations on KPFA radio, and all around knowledgeable man breaks it down on the decks. Perhaps it’s the laid back roots rhythms counteracting structured capitalist thought, or maybe it’s the spiritual vibes flowing free of puritanical dogma. No matter how you interpret it, this irie revolution begins with open ears and indigenous voices echoing from an ancient hero’s DNA.

Much love and thanks to Brother K and Brother Lenz for stopping by. K is so down that even Boots Riley of The Coup had to stop by and give props!

This episode pays homage to those artists who created electronic music outside of the standard computer and software program. From analog synthesizers to vocoders, there exists a legacy of resourceful musicians that leveraged the technology of their time to bring their musical inspirations to life. On top of that, we welcome Aeion Solar (aka the Marquis DuQue) from Burning Man Information Radio to join us in shepherding today’s theme and helping us raise money for Pirate Cat Radio and BMIR-FM. The man is a true musical mind, bringing an eclectic and rare mix of funky electronic music.

If you are listening and would like to donate to Pirate Cat Radio for some much needed equipment, it’s not too late! You can send it via PayPal to BMIR@pobox.com or simply stop by the Pirate Cat Cafe at 2781 21st @ Florida in San Francisco. Any donation is appreciated. Keep independent radio stations alive!

It’s 7:40 PM, on a blustery Saturday evening. I enter the cafe and on the red velveteen couch sits a contemplative, put together young woman. We speak; syllables slide casually and cool out of Emily McLean’s lips, although the espresso machine percolates something hot, her calm aura chills the air around us. Don’t be fooled by her peaceful demeanor, there’s a ferocious singer, songwriter, musician, producer, and one woman jam within her serenity. Now living in San Francisco, by way of New York, Emily’s recently released EP, PS1, graces the airwaves tonight. Tonight’s episode embraces our sensuality and McLean’s soulful neo-jazz reconnects with that sense of self.

Hey hey Sanguine Fam, it’s Mama Feelgood spreading some love with special guests Tiffany Foo—a Priestess of Terra’s Temple in Oakland, and Jen Navarro—a holistic Babaylan-inspired healer. We’re dropping some ancient knowledge, so open your third eye and let your heart’s center shine forward.

Take a deep breath, as you tune into your indigenous frequency. Release the breath MMMMmmmm. Feel vibrations from deep within…We’re calling you back to Babaylan.

Babaylan is one of the many terms for the ancient priestess, healer, shaman, warrior woman that heals holistically both individuals and the community. Best believe, I know some vocal percussionists and MCs can’t deny, there’s a drumbeat that pulses from every cell in your body. Back to Babaylan is remembering your innate rhythm, powerful body. As music has an innate ability to connect with our heart’s frequency, we’re presenting some tracks to assit in that meditation, connection back to self.

So let’s appreciate your inner her/him, an appreciation that can also be connected back to the deepest sense of your internal Earth. Because sadly, as this Earth day has rolled around to the horrific BP oil spill in the Mexican/Louisiana Gulf, the balance of many ecosystems are in flux. The Earth is living and nurturing, so at very least, in connecting to self, our inner Earth connected to the pulse of physical Earth should not be ignored. Babaylan is this holistic connection, a call to the selves we lost through capitalism, colonization, patriarchy, disenfranchisement from the political/economic process, illegal status of gay marriage, illegal status of being human without papers…the list goes on an on and Babaylan is reclaiming this power.

We hope this episode serves you well, with reconnecting—to take a breath, remember you are ancient, and whole…

With love,
Mama Feelgood

“Rain and thunder and lightning
Crumbling buildings
Falling hurricanes
Earth shattering membranes
Scattering insane
Happening
Souls keeps burning
And the sky keeps plummeting
Now—… Cant take long
Revelation
Devastation
Better stay strong “

Tis true, Earth has come a-calling! Before you could take a breather from the Haiti/Chile quakes came a new shake this past weekend. Much love to the folks in Calexico. To spin some light from these events, I’ve always thought of deconstructive natural phenomena as a catalyst for creation…let’s hope and send prayers to all of those whom have been affected in the past months, and allow the positivity—rebuilding, communities coming together for support, and stories of resistance to shine through. And just as recent earth shakes have paralleled the above Blackalicious lyrics, an organic creation is birthing this week—the Sky is Falling SFestival (can also check details below).

Our guest, Baraka Noel aka Mumbles is emcee, poet, performance artist, and grandmaster of this much needed festival for underground emcees. Mumbles hails from the collective We Are The Unreal, and has recently replanted roots in the bay after an almost year long tour canvassing the country with beautiful words and collaborating with other dope emcees. I juxtaposed Blackalicious’ Sky is Falling not only cause it shares a moniker with the festival, but because the spirit, voices, and creation story behind the fest stands in solidarity with those that survive and push to rebuild/recreate. Word, actualizing your heart’s passion into your daily grind, likens with the power of natural phenomena—it just needs incubation/collaboration/movement to be unleashed! Thus, inspiration for Sky is Falling SFestival loins from the souls’ thunder, quakes, from creation, collisions, and into what every local emcee needs to progress—community building.

Dance-catch you in the downpour,
Mama Feelgood

P.S. Calling all ya’ll emcees, poets, artists, photographers, hope-to-bes, show up at Sky is Falling SFestival! Details below:

With hearts building, fist-pumping-printing, this week’s show expresses a world where love is the most potent bullet. Grassroots, collective artivists Melanie Cervantes and Jesus Barraza share with us their passions for art as a medium of community building, their experience as intersections in the legacy of militant printmaking, and their plans to open a neighborhood studio in Cuba! We blessed the show with Sade’s new track “Soldier of Love” because that is exactly what Melanie and Jesus’ collective Dignidad Rebelde is all about. Peep their prints, and you’ll instantly get it.

Our show is also a jubilant send-off as our dear friend and co-host Z Note departs for the bright horizon to explore the country and eventually conquer Grad School! Be sure to send your love and positivity to Z Note as he embarks on a great adventure—as we have with our selections for this episode.

While you enjoy the tracks I also recommend checking out Taller Tupac Amaru, and Eastside Arts Alliance—as Dignidad Rebelde are part of this network of Oakland soldiers who not only cut away at the inconsistencies of our social fabric but reconstruct an environment that improves the quality of life for bountiful community.

This week around we welcome editor, writer, and artist Johnny Ray Huston to guest host and share some sweet yet oh so lugubrious selections with the Sanguine Soul fam. We oriented this episode around Connie Converse’s “How Sad, How Lovely”, a theme set to help us indulge– deeply and magnificently– in our melancholia. Don’t worry though, such mournfulness does not come without its joy! As some writer out there mentioned, in reference to what some other writer said, “if you can’t exorcise your demons, exercise them. ”

Johnny proves to stretch our eclectic and expansive repertoire once again with some excellent picks across the rock, disco, and electronic spectrums, charting the many many ways to express sad/lovely emotional territory. And I, Z Note, help out once I finally get my laptop to work properly with the mixer (oh, pirate radio equipment). There’s a couple exclusive treats in the mix, from Soft Moon’s introspective and haunted synth-wave to Alexis Penney’s oceanic disco, and After Dark’s demo thriller set to run chills down your voyeuristic cyborg heart. But, you have to listen until the end for those lovelies.

Great Integration is an understatement for our guests this week, not only did this crew of folks create a hip-hop opera called Great Integration—what they have achieved (and I’m still trying to wrap my brain around) is an apocalyptic, mystical, mold breaking, saga…yo this ain’t any ol’ Star Wars or Lord of Ring epic saga, it’s narrated by hip-hop emcee Kirby Dominant, unfolded by classical chamber Ensemble Mik Nawooj, and expressed viscerally via Push Dance Company. Based on Daoist perspectives of opening one’s self to creation and understanding forces of deconstruction, Great Integration will be presented to us in several parts (separate performances) that will climax at the end of the Mayan calendar (end of the world) in 2012!

I could summarize the piece but since my brain has not fully accepted the feat I’ll let an except of their press release say it best:

“…In this penultimate installment of the Mik Nawooj saga, Black Swordsman of dominance is chosen as the one to trigger the Great Integration of the world before the arrival of Celestial King. When all the 5 lords of material realm are conquered, the old world we know will merge into one and the Great Celestial King shall descend from 9th heaven to wipe out all the impurities of the world, thus creating a new world with brand new paradigm.”

And always rocking steady for ya, we have our very own Honey Knuckles representing his spin on integration with tracks Sun-Ra would love—melding afro-funk, jazz and a sprinkle of electronic production.

We thank our guests Christopher Nicolas, JooWan Kim, Raissa Simpson for spreading the word on Great Integration work as it was a truly opening and wonderful experience. Enjoy!

With light,

Time flies, and we’ve already hit episode 49, meaning that this website now boasts 98 hours of recorded Sanguine Soul slammers! Jyeah, that’s at least 6 hours of Honey Knuckles saying “what up”, 8 hours of Z Note losing his breadth, 3 hours of Aisha making cat noises, and 90 minutes of Shelmatic’s marbled mouth mushroom flow. Did I really just write all that?

So, in case you were wondering if “Iron & Fire” means that we got our blacksmithing on this show, let me break it down. We finally got a chance to grace the decks for a full 45 minutes each this time around. Whereas Honey Knuckles blessed the decks with 45 minute of the fire-side of the soul spectrum, I (Z Knoooowt) laid down the icy iron backwoods. It makes for a dynamic range of music, from the propulsive madness of Afro-House to the cold drum machines and synth keys of minimal wave. Anyone know of some good minimal Afro-synth-wave? Oh wow, I just blew my mind.

Enjoy, this one’s music heavy, lots of jams!

For this Valentine’s Day weekend we hit you up with not only some drums of passion but also the ebullient vocalizations and soulful poetics that spring forth from the valley of propulsive rhythms. Ya, it’s quite a ride, featuring exuberant sounds from Derrick Love–of San Francisco’s straight heated monthly get-down, Gemini Disco. He rocks a straight vinyl set linking James Brown to pummeling disco jams. We chop up it for a minute, exchanging ideas on creativity with restraint: the focused and specialized character of vinyl DJing in contrast to the sprawling and rhizomatic nature of mp3 DJing.

Shelmatic, back from her LA travels for the moment, starts it all off with the legendary percussionist Babatunde and his unstoppable “Jin-Go-Lo-Ba”, as the drums of passion take us from Nigeria, to Jay Electronica’s New Orleans upbringing, back to California, and all the way around the world once again. I end the show with some slow burning polypercussive fire spanning the Afrobeat, breaks, disco, and electro skunk spectrums of the funk. Tell us what you think, send us music, suggests guests or even yourself as a guest, and we got more for your listening pleasure coming up next week!

It’s February, the month of love, and Sanguine Soul starts it off right with an episode we call “Passing Me By”. Roughly inspired by the Pharcyde song about juvenile infatuation, we channel the youthful heart’s flutter and innocence into our music and present to you a show we can all desire…and secretly admire.

Z-Note kicks off the show with a tribute set paying homage to Dilla, Teddy, and Old Dirty. Next we welcome veteran DJ and producer fflood as he takes us through an enchanting journey starting with Alice Coltrane, weaving through jazz, soul, hip hop, and house vibes, and ending with the beautiful voice of Nina Simone (all using only vinyl). After the set, fflood talks to Mama FeelGood about his music, blog, and how he got his name. Honey Knuckles picks up where fflood left off and closes out the show with an uptempo house set of poly percussive rhythms to make you dance.

This metaphysical realm is when paint, chords, camera angles, notes, words, or medium of choice escape the artist, with little need for cognition, to simply take form from pure impulsive imagination. The guests we present tonight mold their clay from similar instinctive sites.

Tonight’s first featured guest, SF local DJ JB, described forming his sets as “on the fly”–meaning that he’ll have a rough estimate of the genres he’d like to vibe, but ultimately creates his sets in the moment. We also feature an interview with performance artists, Chris Sullivan aka Shockwave and Anthony Veneziale aka Two Touch, from the improv collective Freestyle Love Supreme. In a live pre-recorded interview (I know, the term “live pre-recorded” sounds oximoronic, but the interview was soooo off the hook when we recorded live, I had to disclaim!), breakdown their improv talents as analogous to free jazz.

To honor the free flowing spirits of our guests, Honey Knuckles and I also decided to wing-it, and ended up masterfully bringing-it; evident in the cohesion between banter and mixes which gracefully vibe almost as pure as Coltrane’s Love Supreme!…Haha, I wish! But I do give props to Honey Kunckles who not only spun two short sets so we could present the Freestyle Love Supreme interview within context of some boundary breaking artists, but mixed background for the interview impromptu…ahh that’s good skill.

With all the turmoil happening with our sisters and brothers in Ayiti/Haiti, rains washing upon us, and just trying to flourish fourth from our 9-5’s, we present you an eclectic yet reflective show. For meditating on the meaning of it all, resident Z-Note presents us with a set he dubs Modal Milk—one that swishes you to and fro genera like your cerebellum recalling childhood, yet keeps you grounded in the present awareness of harmonious rhythmic patterns.

Celebrating our abilities to harvest bountiful memories, our technically precise brotha Professor Bang, of the Slayer’s Club, extracts us out of inner selves with a healthy dose of what the Slayer’s do best—charm and audio carnage. And when we say “technically precise” we mean that el professor is indeed a wise and learned aural mixologist. Integrating a sultry side of dubstep with aDoorly remix of Basement Jaxx’s Raindrops, and then skillfully flying up-tempo like speeding on the autobahn, Professor Bang vows that he’ll help grandma cross the street safely yet leave her loving the wobble.

On the real tip, if you do wish to respond with love/donation to Haiti please check out Partners in Health, an organization that has been on the ground with folks in Haiti for over 20 years–and is one of the most inclusive, community-based health models serving the forgotten.

For this week’s episode we tried out something new. Shelmatic jumbled some marbles in her mouth through the whole show, and I (Z Note waxing digital right here) tried to conjure strange words in a fruitless effort to describe the music of Bay Area experimental indie band Birds & Batteries. Who wants to be boxed into the silly expressive powers of language anyway? Band frontman and vocalist, Michael Sempert, dropped in to select some Eritrean drum machine tunes and tell us a bit about B&B’s latest EP, Up To No Good, a minimal funk synth effort that instills magnetizing images of an enchanted forest where the flora and fauna are actually robotic manifestations projected from the mind of a twisted hillside gnome–a psychotic little creature with dark intentions and yet, the pathos of a P Funk, cosmic liberator. It’s really a very satisfying combination of sounds. Imagine if John Carpenter produced the soundtrack to Lord of the Rings in the early 80s. Or consider a prismatic focus into one corner of David Bowie’s labyrinthian monsters.

In the spirit of layering the organic with the electric, we happily conceptualize this episode Verdant Volts, a certain tongue twister for our mush mouthed Shelmatictron. And, yet she still carries the torch, saying much wiser things than I. In the second half of the show I suspend my cationic words in favor of spinning some tunes, intertwining psychedelic jazz, post-punk electronica, abstract beats, and a bit of funkified disco for ya’ll. Enjoy!

After a 2 week hiatus, we are back! We hope you had good times closing out the decade because it’s been a great genesis for us, and we’re grateful that Sanguine Soul had a place in your heart last year. To celebrate the birth of 2010, we decided to forgo the expected decade in review or top 50 list and instead, decided to throw a theme of the abstract variety in your direction: Liquid Alchemy. Special guest U9Lift joins the Sanguine team for a live set, transforming original beats with samples and acapellas to create his own form of musical gold. As usual, Z-Note and Honey Knucks dispel their own brand of magic on the decks to show you their interpretation of the theme. So as you consume our first show of the decade, what is your liquid alchemy?

If you’ve clicked the play button on the above audio then you may already realize that something is awry. We recorded a great show for our fam, featuring many songs of experiences contributed from near and far, and a mad talented live performance from local electronic musician, Noel Vaughn.

But in a twist of fate after so many episodes of clear sailing until today’s one year anniversary show, our two hours of material got smashed into seven minutes of a glitchy pastiche. Quite a seven minutes worth listening to nonetheless–well, if you enjoy a collage of vocal and spatial patterns intermingled by the random impulses of the recording equipment. Much love to everyone who contributed a song and a strong memory associated with its sonic frequency; hopefully you were able to listen to us live! More songs of experience to come in the future!

Be sure to peep Noel Vaughn’s soundcloud for only a taste of what this man can do live with a computer, keyboard, and various trigger pad robotics.

For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere the winter solstice is but on the horizon, changing seasons, perceptions of light and dark, and heralding atmospheric water phenomena. This week we team with our Slayers Club homeboys Manitous and Joe Mousepad in channeling the hydrometeoric energies that have graced our skin and streets, in what we present as our ode to precipitation.

I make our boys blush with some sassy commentary on loving the sultry slickness that Honey Knuckles turned on with the lo-fi oscillations from Natural Self and the funky vocal cataclysm of Alice Russell’s “A Fly in the Hand”. Ohhhh let me warn you, before you have a chance to dry, Joe Mousepad and Manitous brings on more of the wet stuff with their fingers on our sonic trigger! Mousepad drizzles us with a KAOSS-filled jam session along side an Amazonian Rainforest set that goes everywhere from Souls of Mischief to Mux Mool, deluged to us by none other than Mr. Manitous!

Relish the soak from our ode to the element that keeps us flowing, heart’s rivers wide, allowing us another lovely motivation to hold onto the ones that warm us…enjoy with love!

Heart flowing,
Mama FeelGood

Since the industrial revolution, people have leveraged arts to explore the concept of merging human soul with technology (see Fritz Lang’s Metropolis or read Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein). With androids being the epitome of humankind’s effort to merge machine and homosapien, the Sanguine family decided to honor the theme in an episode titled: Android Boogie.

We invite local DJ, King Most, to join us this week and step up to the decks to showcase his eclectic range of drum machine and synth driven tracks. Be sure to catch him next week at the Mezzanine spinning with Spinna and Bobbito for the Stevie Wonder party, Wonderfull. Don’t sleep on that one yo!

So we don’t drink juice in the hood or smoke fools with glocks but we have a mean trio of spinners hitting you tonight. Honey Knuckles beacons with a funk that causes street corner folks to windmill with his old-to-new school span of breaks. Inspired by the ruckus brought forth—straight from the grime of SF underworld shenanigans, guest DJ/producer Ground_Control owns our listening process with a set that leaps yet bridges each and everywhere from breaks to dubstep and funky electro. And before you have a moment to assure yourself that you’re back in the pilot seat of your being, Z Note slaps you silly with circus disco into psych disco and disco house!

Shout out to THE WOMAN, Nicole, promoter of Infatuation Winter Formal for hooking us up with tickets we gave away to a faithful listener. Yes, if you call and email us amazingly splendid things may happen! Our show is so full of amazing that technology prematurely cuts us off—oh well, ya can’t expect 001 1001 001 01110 100110 to keep up with us cause we break all time/space/musical/existential boxes.

It seems we’re coming full circle with the history of hiphop and disco music. The inchoate beginnings of hiphop emerged from dance parties in Bronx projects where everything from James Brown to Kraftwerk and KC and the Sunshine Band could be heard. The first rapp (double p) records pressed on wax were disco raps, from the assumed first of the batch in 1979, Fatback Band’s “King Tim III” to the legendary Sugar Hill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight.” By the late 80s New York hiphop artists rejected disco in favor of the louder funk that would orient the genre for the next two decades. Even the burgeoning West Coast electro rap scene folded for the funk. You can hear recent vitriol (still, in the most fun way possible) towards disco in the Dr. Octagon’s “Bear Witness,” (produced by Dan the Automator), sampling an amazing Tommy Boy promo record by the forgotten 4-Ever Fresh, “Urban Sound Surgeon.” And some heads still can’t get down to the fever.

But, disco is back with a vengeance. From infecting indie punk with infectious dance grooves (thanks “House of Jealous Lovers”), mainstream pop (Black Eyes Peas, Lady Gaga, Kanye), as well as the futuristic thump of the underground (Dam Funk, Hercules and Love Affair). So, in spirit of the restored disco energy, Shelmatic and I (Z Note) venture through a disco breakdown to give you a taste of the variability and exceptional sounds of over 30 years of disco tunes. We lay down some modern soul, dusted boogie grooves, the funkier side of the cowbell, and a dip into synth heavy madness. Tell us what color of the spectrum gets your magic shoes flailing. We love it all.

From the mist of Wu Dang mountain, Pandaman arrives, records and bamboo shoots in hand to throw down a classic reggae and dancehall extravaganza. Honey Knuckles enters his ancestral being and channels his internal dragon to celebrate tonight’s theme: Rhythm and Roots. Together, they are the Double Dragon DJ’s.

Hailing from Chicago by way of Panama, MC Zulu honors the duo with the genesis story of his electronic ragga rhythm. Zulu’s voice will shake you to your core and remind you what roots be all about son!

Halloween gave us Sanguine Soulsters a chance to play some of the freakier — and creepier — tunes that we usually don’t get a chance to bump on the show. From Blowfly’s “Fuck The Devil” to Mobb Deep’s “Shook Ones Pt. II” we take you down a sometimes funny, occasionally scary, and once in awhile absolutely frightening journey through the concept of hauntology. Halloween is an uncanny night where we are encouraged to wear masks and channel the specters of the past or take on the altar personae of what we would like to be. Much of today’s electronic music, from the sample based form of hip-hop to dub-step’s haunted memories of the future, do the same. So, we explore this spirit of the mask with ghostly rhythms and wraithful melodies. Be forewarned, this mix might shake you!

We’re cooking up something special tonight on Sanguine Soul. With the theme ingredient being Bass, guest chefs Matt Haze and Joe Mousepad (Slayer’s Club) drop by the studio to help create this musical feast. I don’t know how you like your Sanguine Soul, but be prepared for low frequency flavors.

For the first course, Z-Note prepares a mix with generous servings of dubstep and hints of southern production. I hope it whets your appetites because Matt Haze unveils the main course next, a classic Drum and Bass set. Using mostly vinyl, he achieves a bold meal with Joe Mousepad adding live freestyle flavors through the mic and Kaoss pad. If you can handle it, then don’t miss out on dessert. Honey Knuckles serves a massively decadent final course of hip hop, glitch, dubstep, and breaks.

The raw, funk break and heavy lyricist sound of the late 80s and early 90s doesn’t carry the genre forward today. Just ask New Yorker columnist Sasha Frere-Jones (although if done right we could “Tream ‘Em Right” like Chubb Rock all over again).

Despite the drastic transitions in mainstream hiphop of our day to the sounds of four on the floor pop disco, some golden age artists are still putting in work. Raekwon just released his phenomenal part II of Only Built For a Cuban Linx. Ghostface is still holding it down and Goodie Mob reunited four a tour. And our very own, homegrown and foundational Souls of Mischief plan their own return to the sage of futuristic old school flavor with the upcoming Montezuma’s Revenge. Representing for the Hiero imperium, Tajai blesses the mic near the end of the show to give us the word on the new album and drop some history on what Souls of Mischief have been up to the past 15 years (wow). Honey Knuckles and myself, Z Note, open it up, venturing forth from Eric B and Rakim’s “Don’t Sweat the Technique.” Expect the straight up funk paired with the synth, always poeticized by amazing lyrical patterns and flows. In true independent and grassroots spirit, we also have a bit of fuzz on this week’s recording. But just think you’re listening to a tape!

Many parenthetical thoughts for this show. Definitely a them to be revisited. Tell us what you think in the comments.

Honey “The Carnal” Knuckles and Z “The Humble Magnaminous” Note go back to the roots of Sanguine Soul with this week’s episode, “Give It Up, Turn It A Loose.” We look towards the one and the only, the funkiest there is, the godfather of soul stompin’ music, the forever imitated and never duplicated, James Brown, for inspiration and guidance on this trek. And with the help of the Soul Power king, we take a trip into the crates of funky grooves, dusty soul, heavy sample based hip-hop, and today’s revival of it all.

Honey Knucks delivers a strictly 45 set, going through his collection of dusty vinyl from Mandril’s “Happy Beat” to Sharon Jone’s “I Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Is In”. As for myself, Z-Note I try to move from the funky hip-hop of Special Ed and Ed O.G. into the new old school of Poets of Rhythm and Breakestra. Shelmatic even calls in near the end to give her word on this show, and you should call in too next time and tell us what you think! Or just leave a comment below.

Enjoy this one, we got some venerable treats for your ear drums!
